Second grade students at Wolftrap Elementary learn basic skills in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health, physical education, art, music, Chinese and technology.
Second graders build on skills learned in first grade. Teachers use a wide variety of activities that foster reading for understanding. Teachers incorporate and build on comprehension strategies such as making connections to self, text and the world; visualizing; questioning and making inferences.
Oral communication skills are developed through book and topical discussions and through sharing small group and individual projects.
In second grade, students will write nonfiction, poetry, narratives, and fiction stories. Through this variety of experiences, students learn the mechanics of writing. Students learn basic spelling patterns through differentiated lessons.
The second grade mathematics program includes: addition and subtraction strategies including three-digit regrouping, problem solving, patterns and numbers to 1000, money, time, measurement, geometry, fractions, probability, and the exploration of multiplication and division.
The second grade social studies program includes topics in: citizenship, maps, Native Americans, economics, Old World explorers,
The second grade science program includes: the classification of living and nonliving things, insects, animal groupings, food chains and webs. Second graders will also learn about environments with a special emphasis on the forest, desert and wetlands. The year culminates with lessons on force, motion, and simple machines.
The second grade health curriculum includes the study of school and bus safety and food groups.
Students also participate twice a week in Chinese language instruction.
