Welcome to First Grade!

First grade students at Wolftrap Elementary learn basic skills in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, health, physical education, art, music, and technology.

First graders enjoy a wide variety of activities that foster the development of reading, writing and oral communication skills. In language arts, communication skills are developed through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students use materials such as individual reading books, trade books, and books from the school and classroom library.

The first grade mathematics program includes objectives in the following areas: number sense, addition and subtraction strategies, geometry, fractions, time, money, and measurement.

The first grade social studies curriculum focuses on holidays and traditions, geography, important people, rules and consequences, and patriotic symbols.

In science, students investigate concepts related to the interdependence between plants, animals, and seasonal changes. Students learn to observe and draw conclusions from their observations.

In health, students learn basic skills to keep them healthy and safe.

First grade students also have physical education classes three times per week, music classes two times per week, library once a week and weekly art instruction. First grade students also participate in Chinese FLES twice per week.

There are two first grade field trips throughout the year. Generally, one is in the fall, and one is in the spring.
