We would like to call your attention to the instrumental music program
which is part of the curriculum of Fairfax County Public Schools. Students
in grades four, five and six may receive instruction in playing orchestral
instruments. Orchestra classes will meet during the school day and will
be free of charge. Instruction will be offered on Violin, Viola, Cello
and Double Bass. In order for your child to participate it will be necessary
for you to furnish an instrument. The local music stores offer trial?purchase
and/or rental plans for these instruments. The Fairfax County Music Curriculum
Specialist has violins and violas available for indigent students who
are unable to pay the rental fee. (Forms available upon request.)
It usually takes one full year to begin to make measurable progress in
an instrumental music program. It is expected that all students enrolling
in the program will remain for the entire year. Stringed instrument instruction
will continue to be available to your child through the 12th grade. Learning
to play an instrument and belonging to the orchestra opens up a whole
new world of friendship and fun. The opportunities of playing a stringed
instrument after high school are abundant with many universities offering
scholarships for orchestra participation.
Studies have shown that participation in music develops the brain in
ways no other endeavor can and that students in music consistently score
higher on standardized tests. The school staff works diligently to maintain
the integrity of our instrumental music program without sacrificing core
curriculum and achievement of the students on the Virginia SOL tests.
If you wish to enroll your child, please complete the
permission form (PDF) and return it to his/her classroom teacher or
office as soon as possible. Returning String Players Should Also Return
This Permission Form (PDF).
