Principal's Corner

Welcome to the White Oaks Elementary School Web Site!  Our motto is “Ensuring Excellence for Every Child”.  Our entire community embraces this motto from our talented faculty to our dedicated volunteers.  We have outstanding programs at White Oaks that maximize student development in all areas through challenging instruction, exemplary fine arts, dynamic physical education, and quality character education.

We hope our web site will acquaint you with our school, our school personnel, and the wonderful instructional programs that we have at White Oaks Elementary.

White Oaks is becoming a school where all children are becoming academically successful.  Regular and varied assessments are used to provide in depth information about students skill levels in reading and mathematics.  Students are taught in groupings matched to their level of mastery and their developmental abilities.  As a result students experience academic success.  As needed, students receive extra support and additional enrichment.  Our classroom teachers work collaboratively with the ESOL and the special education team to support daily instruction.  Our Gifted and Talented Center teachers provide a challenging program that not only accelerates instruction but also encourages higher order thinking and creative problem solving.

All students develop technological competency and confidence.  We have one full computer lab and a mini-lab in each pod area.  In addition, we have two portable labs that we affectionately call COWS that is, Computers on Wheels.  Our students have experience with online research, creating slide shows and using presentation devices.  Our goal is ensure that our students are prepared for the 21st century workplace.

Our students are allowed to explore their potential. We have a comprehensive music program that includes opportunities to participate in chorus, strings, and band.  The art program brings out the artist in every child. Our students develop an appreciation of the fine arts and confidence in their own abilities as an artist or performer.

Our physical education program encourages good health and fitness for life.  Through a variety of instructional activities the White Oaks students develop their athletic abilities and team skills such as, sportsmanship and cooperation.

Through our character education program, we help our children to develop the skills needed to be productive, responsible citizens.  Our students to find and evaluate information, make wise decisions, and resolve conflicts.  It is our goal that every child will become a self-confident, life-long learner.  Our school-wide, positive discipline plan encourages the students to be respectful and responsible.

We have an active PTA that supports our mission and has an important role in building a positive school community.  They provide cultural enrichment, academic and financial support, and a variety of exciting after school programs.  Our parents are involved in the development and implementation of the School Plan.  We encourage all parents to forge a strong partnership with their child’s teachers.

On behalf of our White Oaks Community, I want to thank you for visiting or web site.  I encourage you to visit often to keep informed about our dynamic school.

Counseling Center

Mrs. Mejia (Counselor for upper grades)

"From the Counselors" Newsletter (Fall 2011)

This page is designed to provide parents an awareness of some of the guidance services provided for White Oaks students.   Every month one of the school's counselors is scheduled to visit each class and provide a guidance lesson.  The lessons are individualized for grade levels and the particular needs of the various groups of students.  Near the beginning of the school year, Ms. Mejia and Ms. Bush set a plan for the school year.  They select concepts and  related character traits that provide a basis for their lesson planning.

In addition to the monthly guidance lessons, counselors provide students with a variety of opportunities to address concerns that are common among elementary school-aged children.  The opportunities may occur in a group setting or on an one-to-one basis.  Some students self refer and sometimes parents or teachers suggest that students work with counselors.   Discussion sessions may be spur of the moment as needed, others are on-going, or short term. Group topics include anger management, self improvement, friendship, family transitions, study skills, mediation skills, and healthy choices.

The collaboration of school staff, parents, and students is critical for the success of each child in acquiring a quality education.  Your child's counselor can be a key advocate.  Please contact one of the counselor's if you need their perspectives and special focus to insure excellence for your child.
