Mission
: The White Oaks School Counseling Program is designed to promote
and enhance student achievement.
Goals: Through leadership, advocacy and collaboration, we:
· Promote equity and access to opportunities and academic programs for all
students
· Support and promote a safe learning environment for all students
· Support the needs of all students through prevention and intervention
programs.
· Implement a structured guidance program that helps students develop
social, peer relation and academic achievement skills, and high ethical
standards appropriate to their developmental level.
· Carry out preventive or interventive activities that meet students’ individual
needs, such as consultation with parents, teachers or other professionals,
individual or group counseling, referral to outside sources, or providing
resources or information to students and parents
· Develop confidential relationships with students and parents to help them
resolve or cope with problems or developmental concerns.
· Pursue professional development, consultation, and collaboration to
improve the school counseling program and promote school counseling at
the local, state and national levels.
Ms. Bush and Ms. Mejia offer a variety of opportunities to address concerns that
are common among elementary school students. Counselors visit each class once
a month to teach guidance lessons. Lessons are designed to meet students’
developmental needs as well as specific needs of students at White Oaks
Elementary School. Students may also meet with their counselors on an
individual basis or in small groups. Students can self refer or be referred to work
with the counselors by parents and teachers. Individual discussion sessions may
be spur of the moment, on going, or short term. Small groups are short term and
usually conducted during lunch. Group topics include anger, self improvement,
friendship, family transitions, and study skills.
The collaboration between school staff, parents, and students is critical to
insure each child acquires a quality education. Your child’s counselor can be a
key advocate. Please contact one of the counselors if you need their perspective
and special focus to assist your child in meeting his or her needs to reach their full
potential.
