A Message from your PTA President

Dear Weyanoke Parents and Teachers,

Snow, snow everywhere!  We will never forget the blizzard of 2010.  We hope you enjoyed your family time together and that everyone was safe and cozy.  Now it is time to get back to school.  Thank you to everyone who cleared sidewalks and checked out the bus stops so that they were safe when they went back to school.  Our children really missed school and their friends and were ready to return to school when the snow finally stopped.

Our Chuck E. Cheese fundraising event on January 28 was very well attended and everyone had fun.  We received over $600 from the event. We appreciate your support even in these difficult times. The PTA needs your support both in time and financially.  The PTA helps to pay for field trips and assemblies that expose our children to different learning experiences than they normally have in the classroom.  The next assembly will be Character Counts on Tuesday, March 9.  The character counts program teaches our children about good character traits such as responsibility, caring, citizenship, respect for others, fairness, and trustworthiness.  I am sure all your children have come home proudly with their “WOW” cards showing that they have learned one or more of these great traits. They are happy when they receive them, show an accomplishment, and make their parents and teachers proud.

As you may know, the budget for Fairfax county Public Schools is being cut.  The School Board has adopted a budget that will affect all schools.  However, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors has yet to adopt the County budget which may further reduce the school budget.  Let’s hope that the effect on Weyanoke will be minimal.

On a more positive note, I hope to see you all at the Heritage Festival on Friday, March 12.  The children have been working hard on their program and are very excited to show their parents what they have accomplished.  We have over 500 students at Weyanoke from about 50 countries that speak about 35 different languages.  We look forward to the variety of cultural food to be served by our teachers in our cafeteria, seeing the different clothing from various countries, and meeting our teachers and other parents.  This is an opportunity for your children to learn about other cultures.

We are in the midst of planning for the Spring Fun Fair on Friday, April 30.  This is the biggest PTA event of the year with games, raffles, food, and prizes.  We are in need of donations from our community businesses such as Karate lessons, restaurant dinners or other services for our raffle prizes.  If you can help, please contact our Fun Fair Committee Chair, Suzanne Mounier at suzannemounier@msn.com.  We will need donations by April 12.  We also need lots of people to volunteer to help with the games and other activities.  Please contact our volunteer coordinator, Holly Koechel at hkk214@gmail.com.

Please see the article regarding recycling in this newsletter.  We want to encourage children to recycle in our school and at home.  We are recycling through a company called Terracycle.net.

The next PTA meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 15.  Everyone is welcome.

Love and Peace,

Debra Johnson
