A Message from your PTA President
Dear Weyanoke Parents and Teachers,
The Weyanoke Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) hopes that you had a great summer with your children and welcomes all new families to the Weyanoke Community. The PTA is off to a great start this year. We need your support for the many services we help provide for our children and teachers. The PTA provides money for buses for field trips, educational assemblies for the children, Honor Roll Awards, teacher appreciation gifts, and much more.
You can help by joining the PTA and volunteering just 1 to 2 hours of your time anytime during the school year. Membership forms were sent out in the Wednesday folder. We have started our annual membership drive. We will have a contest with prizes. Anyone who has already joined will be included for each grade class prize. The yearly dues remain at only $7.00 per year and with your membership, you will get a free student directory. Show pride in your school by purchasing a Weyanoke magnet for your car or refrigerator for $5.00. They are available in the school office. The Woodchuck magnet has the school phone number and the number to call if your child is absent. If you have any questions, please contact our Vice President and Membership Chair, Marjorie Smith, at marjorie.j.smith@irs.gov.
We are so proud of the success of Weyanoke Elementary School making Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) this year based on the standards of learning (SOL) testing last school year. AYP is part of the Federal No Child Left Behind initiative.
We will have our Fall Book Fair from Monday, October 24 to Monday, October 31. Please come to the Book Fair in the school library to purchase books for your children. We also need volunteers to help with the Book Fair. Please contact Jana Hollis, the Book Fair Chair, at jana@jchollis.com to volunteer for a time slot.
We are still recycling juice pouches and chip bags. Containers for the pouches and bags are located in the cafeteria, teacher lounges, and Tropical Smoothie in the Staples Mall. The PTA is trying to teach children the importance of recycling for our environment. We have sent in over 8,000 pouches and 1,600 chip bags. This year, we will get over $92 from Terracycle which helps pay for field trips. For more information, check on-line at terracycle.net.
I am the mother of three children at Weyanoke. Tony and Maria are fifth-grade students and Jose’ is in second grade. The best time to start helping is anytime but we started helping the PTA when our fifth-grade children started Kindergarten. I am proud to serve our community by being your volunteer PTA President for my forth year.
Our next PTA meeting is Monday, October 17 at 9:30am in the school library. If you would like a copy of PTA meeting minutes, please make sure we have your email or address. If you would like to suggest anything, please let us know prior to a meeting. We are listening. We will be sending out a survey and hope you will all reply.
The PTA is a powerful voice for all our children, a relevant resource for families and communities, and a strong advocate for the education and will being of every child. Please join the PTA and volunteer. Thanks so much!
