Happy Holidays to Weyanoke Parents, Teachers, and Children,
Your Parent/Teacher Association (PTA) continues to be active on your behalf. We are still in the running for a new playground from Terracycle/Old Navy as the result of everyone recycling juice pouches and chip bags in the cafeteria, teacher lounges, and at Tropical Smoothie in the Staples Mall. We have also received over $170 from Terracycle for recycling. This money will be used to fund field trips for our children.
We had a very successful Book Fair in October, headed up by our Treasurer, Jana Hollis, which brought in as much money as last year. This money will also be used for field trips and educational assemblies for our children. We had a wonderful Magic Assembly, “Finding the Magic in Your Life,” on December 16. Our fall Domino Pizza fundraiser, headed up by our Vice President, Marjorie Smith, raised $102.
The PTA is a healthy presence at Weyanoke and we have 148 members so far. We have conducted a survey of members to see what they think about our PTA and what the PTA can do for our children. We should have the results in January.
We had a great party for the classes that had the most parents and teachers join the PTA and we had a drawing with prizes on WWEY NEWS (the Weyanoke TV network at school) for teachers and parents who had joined the PTA this year. The winning classes were Ms. Crutchley, Ms. Strom, Ms. Knieriem, Ms. Liebenau, Ms. Kwiecinski, and Ms. Jones. The teacher raffle winners were Ms. Heald and Ms. Knieriem. The parent raffle winners were Blanca Troncoso Moebis and Sue Gravitt. We hope they enjoyed their prizes. The more members who join; the more we can do for our children. You can join at anytime during the year. We have kept our membership dues ($7) low so that everyone can join. If you have paid your PTA dues this year, you should have received a student directory.
In May 2012, we need to elect new officers for the PTA. President Debra Johnson and Treasurer Jana Hollis cannot serve again according to our By-Laws. We will need a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. If anyone is willing to serve, please contact me or any of your PTA officers. We cannot have a PTA next year unless we have members willing to be officers.
Whether you come to a meeting or not, we encourage everyone to join the PTA. We love everyone’s ideas so please come out to our next PTA meeting on Monday, January 9, 2010 at 9:30 AM in our school library. Our meetings only last one hour but we get much accomplished. We ask that everyone, who can, give the PTA at least two hours of volunteer time during the year. If you cannot make the meetings, please sign up to volunteer for one of the PTA’s upcoming activities. Contact our volunteer coordinator, Michelle Leete, at or 703-354-4751, and let her know when you are available to help.
Our next big fundraiser and community building opportunity will be at Chuck E. Cheese on Thursday, January 26, from 3:30 PM to closing. The children always look forward to this event. Chuck E. Cheese comes to the school and the children enjoy being with their friends and family and meeting other families at Chuck E. Cheese. Please come and support the PTA. We need a few volunteers to monitor the door and give out Weyanoke stickers as families come in the door at Chuck E. Cheese on Little River Turnpike near Fairfax City.
We will have our second annual Spelling Bee on Thursday, February 16. Participants should have already signed up and will receive the list of spelling words before the winter break. The words can also be found at https:sites.google.com/ site/weyanokepta/spelling-bee-1. The children should study the words during the winter break so they will be prepared. The coordinators for the Spelling Bee are our Secretary, Rebecca Jenkins, and Marjorie Smith.
Please get involved with our PTA and you will see how much can be accomplished during the year for our children. Enjoy your time at home with your family during the winter break. Remember to read to your children and let them know how much you love them.
Love and Peace, Debra Johnson, PTA President
