Weyanoke’s New Morning Routine

School starts at 8:40! In order to ensure that the daily routine runs smoothly throughout the year, here are some key points that parents may find helpful:

  • Walkers and car riders should not arrive at school before 8:15 a.m
  • All students must arrive by 8:40 a.m., or they will be marked late.
  • Beginning at 8:15 a.m. children are directed to the cafeteria (for breakfast) or to the gym. Walkers and car riders who plan to eat breakfast at school must arrive by 8:25 a.m.
  • Staff members supervise students in both the cafeteria and the gym. Students are dismissed from these locations to their classrooms beginning at 8:30 a.m.
  • Students who are car riders should be dropped off in the Kiss and Ride area in the rear of the school (near SACC). Please use the entrance next to the school marquee so you are not driving in the bus lane.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office. We appreciate your cooperation in helping each day get off to a smooth start!

Weyanoke is a Title I School

Title I is a federal program that serves schools throughout the United States. The Title I program was reauthorized under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The purpose of this legislation is "to help the neediest schools and students reach the same challenging standards expected of all children." (Public Law 107-110)

The Title I program provides extra help to students to assist them in meeting state and local education standards. The program serves millions of children in elementary and secondary schools each year. Most school districts participate. Funds are directed to schools with the highest poverty levels.

Because Weyanoke is a Title I School, we are fortunate to have the following resources available at our school: Step Up Mathematics (SUM), Step Up Language Arts (SULA), and Reading Recovery.

The purpose of the Step Up Mathematics (SUM) program is to increase the mathematics achievement of students in Title I schools. Title I SUM teachers work with classroom teachers to assess student learning and to plan instruction that enables students to understand mathematical concepts, apply problem solving strategies, and develop computational skills. SUM teachers also provide ongoing professional learning for teachers in their schools. They work in classrooms as well as with small groups of students. Instruction is based upon the FCPS Program of Studies (POS), the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards.

The Step Up Language Arts (SULA) program is designed to strengthen students’ reading and writing skills. Title I reading specialists and classroom teachers work together to assess students’ strengths and needs and to plan appropriate literacy instruction. SULA instruction focuses on the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. SULA teachers provide ongoing professional learning for teachers in their schools. They work in classrooms as well as with small groups of students. Instruction is based on the FCPS Program of Studies (POS) and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL).

Reading Recovery® is a short-term, early intervention program. It is designed for first grade children who are not learning to read and write as quickly as their peers. Children in Reading Recovery receive daily lessons from a specially trained teacher for approximately 12-20 weeks. The instruction is in addition to classroom reading and writing instruction.

Title I Family Involvement Policy

Weyanoke Elementary School

“A Community of Learners”

Fairfax County Public Schools’ Title I program is established to improve student achievement and help all students meet the objectives of the Fairfax County Program of Studies and Virginia Standards of Learning.

To ensure that this goal is met, a partnership with families is essential. Therefore, Weyanoke Elementary School commits to working in partnership with families in the following ways:

  • Inform parents at Back-to-School Night about the Title I program, introduce the Weyanoke School/Home Compact, and No Child Left Behind and their purpose. Have translators in various languages available so that families of all languages can understand our purpose.
  • Include information on curriculum, the Virginia Standards of Learning, and school level assessments in “Weyanotes”, the PTA newsletter. Translate the newsletter into Spanish. Host an SOL Open House for parents to drop by the Parent Resource Center to discuss assessments.
  • Provide varied workshops that assist families in supporting their child’s academic achievement: Math Fun Day, Partners in Print, Book Fair Evenings, Heritage Festival, Family Fun Fair. These programs are for all of Weyanoke’s students and families including FECEP.
  • Communicate with families on a regular basis regarding their child’s progress in school, as much as possible in their primary language. Communication can be through progress reports, phone calls home, agenda notes, conferences, and Friday Folders. Utilize Weyanoke’s parent liaison to assist with communication.
  • Establish early relationships with families by holding parent conferences. Use our August “Meet and Greet” and September “Back to School Night” as a critical contact to ensure families connect with teachers. Have translators available at these events for parents whose primary language is not English.
  • Offer opportunities for parents to serve on school committees such as Weyanoke’s School Improvement Plan, which will allow parents to make suggestions for programs and ways to strengthen parent involvement in our school. Work closely with Weyanoke’s PTA to determine effectiveness of Weyanoke’s School-Home Compact and Family Involvement Policy.

Character Counts at Weyanoke!

This year is our third year of making Weyanoke a Character Counts! School. This program focused on six essential life skills, called the six pillars of character:

  • Trustworthiness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Fairness
  • Caring
  • Citizenship

As part of our character education program, we will be teaching a different pillar each month, and recognizing students when they show those character traits listed above. We do this by awarding “WOW cards” to students, then posting them in the halls for everyone to see.

Weyanoke made AYP!

Our SOL results indicate that we will receive full accreditation from the state. Our goal at Weyanoke is to celebrate the successes of each student. We celebrate those accomplishments by recognizing their efforts in class, by acknowledging their acheivements to them and to their parents, and by communicating our pride in their accomplishments. Growing and learning is our purpose, and celebrating each step in the process is a source of joy. We want you to be a part of this process. We want you to celebrate every accomplishment every child makes this school year!

We look forward to another fantastic year!
