PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY |
Westlawn is implementing the Professional Learning Community model. Emphasis continues on cultivating effective team collaboration to develop common assessments, examine student work, and create common practices that increase student learning at each grade level. |
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOOL |
Westlawn is in a relationship with George Mason University’s School of Education as a Professional Development School. This program accepts post bachelor level individuals and trains them in a Masters level program with a full year internship in the school. We have a core staff trained as Clinical Faculty through GMU. Over the years of the program, Westlawn teachers have trained an average of five new teachers per year. Our teachers work collaboratively with the GMU professor who supervises these interns. This project helps to make Westlawn a stronger Professional Learning Community. Our teachers share instructional strategies and work together on research projects with GMU. Several of these research projects have been published in national education journals. The PDS/GMU program raises the level of professionalism in our school and empowers teachers to become instructional leaders. |
PBS |
Westlawn’s PBS program is continuing to increase student ownership of their learning and their lives. |
