Principal's Corner

Dear Bulldogs,

Spring Break is over. Summer will be here before we know it!

For a number of reasons, the last month has been especially challenging. There have been a few events in particular which have forced some of our students, their families and our staff to deal with extreme emotions. Recent drug activity, for example, by some of our current and former students has also gained much attention from other students, staff, and parents alike.

I can assure you that Westfield High School will continue to be a safe and secure environment for all students. We will continue to implement measures to eliminate tobacco, alcohol and drug use by our students. However, parents joining us to combat these illegal activities will only help ensure the safety and well-being of our students both at school and in the community.

While I am concerned about the fact that some of our kids are involved in these illegal activities, I am proud of the way most of our students are committed to healthy lifestyles and good decision-making every day. We will continue to try to help with the use of lockdowns and the Fairfax County Police canine unit to rid this school of even the smallest amount of drugs.

Congratulations to Terri Towle for being honored as Educator of the Year by the Herndon –Dulles Chamber of Commerce. I must note National Sectary’s Week will be April 20-26. Our administrative assistants demonstrate outstanding commitment and support for the students and staff each and every day. I would like especially to thanks Diana Warfield, my administrative assistant, for keeping me in line and adding to the friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the main office.

A special thanks to all of the students involved in Saturday Night in the Suburbs, a PTSA Centreville/Chantilly Community Coalition. This was a very successful event attended by almost 100 parents.

So many groups have won awards and standout nationally. FBLA, DECA, Robotics, Debate, and Forensics are prime examples. Of course, band and orchestra playing at Carnegie Hall in New York is quite an honor. Don’t miss Romeo and Juliet this weekend. The Theatre Department always puts together some unbelievable showcases for the talent of your students.

Spring sports have begun. This is our most active season, since there are more teams functioning in the Spring than the other two seasons.

We are excited about hosting the State Jubilee here at Westfield. The VHSL AAA State Championships will be held in girls and boys soccer, girls and boys lacrosse, baseball, and softball. I can’t wait! Mr. Dall, director of student activities, and his staff are to be commended for their efforts in bringing this event to Westfield. I takes a lot of time to put it all together.

Remember to check the calendar in this issue of The Watchdog for the testing and end of the year schedules. Try to make appointments that do not interfere with these important times.

Sincerely,

Tim Thomas
