ADVANCED BAND LEVELS 1 & 2 (WIND SYMPHONY, SYMPHONIC BAND)

Prerequisite: Successful audition

Students in this course form the representative-performing band for the school. Emphasis is placed on the sequential development of advanced technical skills and on the study of related literature. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. After-school rehearsals and performances are required of all students as a part of the course. Marching band techniques and performances are included in this course.

Prerequisite: successful audition

Students continue developing as individual musicians and as members of a musical group. They learn intermediate level technical and ensemble skills necessary for performance. After-school rehearsals and performances are required of all students as an integral part of the course. Students will continue to develop as individual musicians as well as members of a group.

Students develop skills as individual musician and as members of a musical group. Guidance will be given by the instructor in the selection of an instrument. course content includes beginning level technical and ensemble skills necessary for performance. some performance opportunities are provided. Rehearsals and performances outside of normal school hours may be required as a parr of this course. Students should expect to move into a full ensemble class upon completion of placement requirements.

JAZZ BAND
Grades: 9-12

Prerequisite: Successful audition and permission of the instructor.

The instrumental jazz combo curriculum emphasizes improvisation and styles of the jazz idiom. Content includes the study of blues, scale patterns, and harmonic progressions innate in jazz music. Content also includes the study of appropriate jazz literature, and rehearsal and performance techniques from the jazz idiom. Performances and rehearsals both in and out of school may be required. Instrumentation of the jazz combo is at the discretion of the jazz instructor.

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE

Prerequisite: Successful audition.

This course is open to any student who is already enrolled in a band class within the school. The course is not a beginning level course. Content includes study of the appropriate percussion ensemble literature, and rehearsal and performance techniques from the various areas of musical composition. Students will be expected to perform with concert band ensembles as assigned. After- school sectionals, rehearsals and performances are required as part of the class. The course will cover all aspects of percussion performance: solos, small ensembles, and sectional playing. Instrumentation of the group is at the discretion of the instructor.

SHOW/SWING CHOIR

Vocal Jazz Ensemble
Grades: 9-12
Credit: one
Prerequisite: Successful audition

This class meets Wednesday nights from 5:45-8 p.m. and Thursdays from 3-4:30 p.m. Students must be able to attend all classes to meet the requirements to receive 1 credit for this course. Other rehearsals are sometimes required. Students who audition into show choir must also be enrolled in another choral course.

Students are offered choral experiences in the appropriate genre. They develop both musicianship and proficiency in ensemble performance. Course content includes a study of appropriate literature, vocal techniques, sightsinging, and choreography. Students learn the fundamentals of guitar. Guitar instruction emphasizes music theory and chordal progressions as well as fingerings for chord patterns. Instructional literature is selected from classical and contemporary repertoire. Guest artists and field trips to performances and/or seminars may also be part of the curriculum. Students have performances throughout the year.

All hands on, some group work: note reading, scale and chord structure, All styles emphasized and a background in each style is achieved.

Practice, practice, practice!!!! A journal of times practiced collected twice in a grading period.

Guitar method books, ensemble music. Students may rent guitars or bring their own from home.

Instructional literature is selected from classical and contemporary repertoire. Guest artists and field trips to performances and/or seminars may also be part of the curriculum. All scales and modes are taught and students learn fundamentals of improvising. Students will perform throughout the year.

All hands-on. Some group work. Introduction to guitar ensemble. Introduction to jazz, classical and blues styles. More in-depth focus on scales and chords in relation to specific styles. Rock styles at the end of the year.

Practice, practice, practice!! A journal of times practiced is collected twice per grading period.

Students in this course form the representative performing guitarensemble for the school. Emphasis is placed on the sequential development of advanced technical skills and on the study of related literature. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. After school rehearsals and performances are required of all students as a part of the course. There is an opportunity for further study of classical guitar.

Describe a typical lesson in this class.

Students will rehearse and study ensemble guitar music. Music will be varied in style ranging from classical, to jazz and modern ensemble pieces. Students will learn how to play as a group and prepare for performances. Sight reading will be required.

What kind/how much homework is required in this class?

Practice, Practice, Practice! Students will turn in a practice log every two weeks.

What kind of materials do you use in this course ?

Footstools, tuner, guitar (rented, or personal) sheet music.

Is there any after-school commitment or extracurricular activities associated with this class?
There will be two main concerts after school at mid-year and at the end of the school year.

How can this class help me in the future?

Will work on performing skills, playing music with an ensemble, sight reading music and furthering guitar skills. Also prepare those to play in a college level ensemble.

Students in this course form the representative string performing group for the school. The course helps students develop technical, ensemble, and disciplinary skills necessary for refined rehearsal and performance both in and out of school. Based on successful completion of sequential concepts for each level, students will continue as specified in course level. After-school rehearsals and performances are required of all students as a part of the course.

Describe a typical lesson in this class.

Class consists of a heterogeneous rehearsal, combining all of the string instruments. Within the rehearsal schedule, tuning procedures will be established and concert pieces will be learned through the development of tone, pitch, articulation, style and musical phrasing of every student.

What kind/how much homework is required in this class?

It is expected that all students will perform their music at a high standard. Individual practice time at home will be necessary to achieve the high level of competency that will be displayed at each Westfield High School Orchestra concert.

What kind of materials do you use in this course ?

All students are required to have an appropriately-sized instrument at home for practice. In addition, Westfield High School Orchestra has a limited number of instruments available for those students in need and will provide school use instruments for all cello and bass players.
Is there any after-school commitment or extracurricular activities associated with this class?

There will be periodic after-school and evening rehearsals required for this course during each concert sequence. The purpose of these rehearsals is to combine groups of students who do not otherwise share a class period during the school day for performance purposes. This includes rehearsals for the Westfield High School Symphony Orchestra and other combinations of String Orchestras.

How can this class help me in the future?

MUSIC THEORY

Grades: 9-12
Credit: one

Students are instructed in basic music theory which will develop their understanding, of and skill in, recognizing and notating all major and minor scales, rhythms in simple and compound meters, and triadic chord structures. Composition written in standard notation of simple melodies, with accompanying chords and keyboard performance of simple tunes, may also be included. Students will become acquainted with appropriate musical terms.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT MUSIC THEORY
Grades: 10-12
Credit: one

Prerequisite: Music Theory or equivalency exam
The purpose of this course is to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement music theory examination, with college credit and/or placement being awarded if a qualifying score is achieved. Students are given a solid foundation in intervals, pitch patterns, metric/rhythmic patterns, chords, and the terms that are part of a basic understanding of reading, performing, and listening to music. Analysis and some elementary composition, aural skills, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony will also be included. All students are required to take Advanced Placement Music Theory exam.

Analysis of music, history of classical music, some lecture, mostly hands-on projects and writing of music

What kind/how much homework is required in this class?

Homework every class period in the form of written assignments, reading assignments, listening assignments, and ongoing ear training exercises.
