April is National Autism Awareness Month


Autism Awareness Day at the FCPS Parent Resource Center is on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Dunn Loring Center for Parent Services, 2334 Gallows Road, Entrance 1, Dunn Loring, Virginia 22027. As a part of this annual event, the FCPS Parent Resource Center will host two FREE workshops for parents and educators. Join us for the workshops and enjoy lunch, free resources, door prizes and more!


The first workshop, Next Stop will be presented by Glen Finland, author and mother of a young adult on the autism spectrum. Ms. Finland will share her own hard-learned lessons as well as strategies and insights she has learned about the uniquely individual dynamics of families with special needs. This workshop is from 10 am – 12 pm in Room 100.

Lunch, resources, and door prizes will be in the FCPS Parent Resource Center, Room 105 from 12:00 – 12:30 pm


The second workshop, Anxiety in Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders will take place from 12:30 - 2 pm in Room 100. Dr. Sajjad Khan, clinician and researcher, will discuss anxiety in students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and resulting behaviors. Dr. Kahn will also discuss assessment and treatment options.

As we continue to highlight Autism Awareness Month, the FCPS Parent Resource Center will also offer Autism & Safety - Public Safety Considerations on Thursday, April 30thfrom 10 am – 12 pm. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other cognitive disabilities may not recognize danger, react well in an emergency or be able to seek help. Join us for this important workshop to learn proactive steps to reduce the risk of potential dangers.
