AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
What is AVID?
AVID is an academic program designed to increase the rigor of coursework taken by West Potomac students. Every AVID student is in at least one pre-AP, honors or full AP class. AVID provides structure and support to students taking those advanced courses.
The AVID program is designed to have students:
- succeed in a rigorous curriculum (all AVID students take at least one AP/honors course)
- participate in activities of the school
- enroll in four-year colleges
- become educated and responsible participants and leaders in a democratic society

What do we do in the AVID elective class?
- WIC-R:
- Writing,
- Inquiry,
- Collaboration
- And Reading.
- Necessary to be successful in pre-AP and AP classes, and eventually in college.
- TUTORIALS:
- Collaborative Inquiry
- Twice a week In the AVID class with professional adult tutors and their peers
- Discuss through questioning the topics they are learning in their other classes
- ORGANIZATION:
- AVID binder system
- A school agenda
- Cornell Note System
- COLLEGE/CAREER PLANNING:
- College and career research activities,
- Field trips
- and guest speakers
- CHALLENGE STUDENTS ABOUT WHO THEY ARE: One of the most important parts of AVID is helping students learn about themselves and make proper choices in life. Many of the AVID class activities, although academic in nature, often force students to reflect on who they are and who they want to become. Pointing students towards their own path to success is always our goal.
