Moving to another school at the end of the school year? Parents, please contact Ms. Lauren Clark, Registrar, at 703-718-2551 or email her at lauren.clark@fcps.edu so that preparations can be made to ensure that your child's records are sent to the new school.
Jamie Hollins, a senior here at WP, has just been selected as Mentor of the Month through MentorWorks, our umbrella mentoring organization for the county. He is the first ever high school student to receive this honor. He is featured on their website: www.fcps.edu/ss/MentorWorks
The teachers from the low-incidence department (moderately/severely disabled and autism
programs) wish to thank all of those who went on line and voted for their “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to Save the Earth” SMARTBoard lesson. Because of your support West Potomac won the SMARTBoard contest. We know your time is valuable and we appreciate your support of the special education department. The packet West Potomac will receive includes a SMARTBoard 600i and an annual subscription to the SMART Learning Marketplace. Our winning lesson is to be featured on SMART’s microsite on Scholastic.com – www.scholastic.com/interactivewhiteboards. Again, congratulations to our special education students and teachers, and thanks to all those in the community who supported us by voting.
Dietze Named Southern District Athletic Director of the Year
Jeffrey Dietze, who recently retired as director of student activities at West Potomac High School, has been named the Southern District Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Dietze will receive his award at the NASPE convention in Texas in early April.
Dietze, who was in charge of student activities at West Potomac for more than 27 years, is one of five district winners named by NASPE, one of whom will be named National Athletic Director of the Year on April 11.
Dietze was one of the administrators who helped form West Potomac High School from the former Fort Hunt High and Groveton High Schools in the 1980s. He worked with coaches to integrate their teams with students from both schools and was instrumental in convincing parents and the community to support West Potomac.
As chair and cochair of the Virginia High School League Coaching Education program for 12 years, Dietze was instrumental in obtaining certification for the Virginia American Sport Education program. He is a past winner of the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators State Athletic Director of the Year award and the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Distinguished Service Award.
Dietze earned his undergraduate degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree from George Mason University.
Track Team advances to State!!
The boys and girls winter track teams had several athletes advance to the Virginia State Championships on Saturday:
Kat Lee was simply ridiculous! Scoring in every single event she attempted. 2nd - Long Jump, 3rd - Triple Jump, 3rd - Pole Vault, 4th - 55m Dash, 6th - 300m Dash, 7th - 800m Relay. She will obviously be competing in only a few of those events next Saturday.
The 4 x 800m Relay team of Brooke Regensburg, Elizabeth Heath, Mara Cate and Kelsey Rosenberg won the Regional Championship with a stunning leg from the two last legs to pull away from West Springfield for victory.
Kelsey Rosenberg also placed individually in the 1000m Run.
Kaitlyn Anderson also advanced to the state meet in the pole vault.
The boys sprint relay team of Julian Holden, Kristan Rodriquez, Jon McCants and Brandon Comfort also qualified out of the slow section to finish 3rd overall and advance to next weeks meet.
Kelly Carmichael stunned everyone by finishing 6th in the 1600m run after only 1 hours rest from his 7th place performance in the 3200m Relay. He also will advance individually.
Maintaining a school web site is no small task. Information often needs to be coordinated between many individuals. Despite our best efforts, errors or omissions occur and unfortunately get overlooked. So, if something is omitted or an error is found, please write the site's administrators. The information that we gather from our readers will allow us to better serve the school and its community.
