Fashion Design - Maggy François

About the Instructor:

Prior to beginning her career in Event Design and Production Management Maggy François wore many hats in the design industry. Her experience in teaching fashion, fabrics and construction, as well as elements of design and production; coupled with special event management, business management, bridal consulting, visual and interior merchandising has led François to start an entrepreneurial venture, Fashion Show Production and Event Design.

In 1996, François began to produce fashion shows and provide behind the scenes productions for numerous reputable organizations along the East Coast. She formed an event management company specializing in the fashion trade, working with well known designers such as Courtney Washington, Edward Wilkerson, Manale, Francis Hendy, and Sean “Diddy” Combs Collection just to name a few. Currently, François is expanding her event management company to serve the wedding market and design beautiful events for high profile socialites. In addition, she is co-founder of an accessory company Swanky By MJ where they design Luxe Handmade Clutches.

François holds a Bachelors degree in Clothing, Textiles and Fashion Merchandising, has done postgraduate work in International Studies, Professional Certification in Marketing Education & Fashion Design and obtained certification in Web Design Implementation. Francois is on the Education & Training team for the Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce and an Executive member of New York Fashion Group International, Inc. Francois loves her job, especially being able to teach students innovative and creative ideas.

Course Information:

Fashion Design 1

Grades: 11-12 Credits: two Prerequisites: Art 1 (912000), Fashion Marketing (814000), Introduction To Interior and Fashion Design (825432) or approval of instructor.

The Fashion Design I students will begin to explore an in-depth creative process and develop technical and presentation skills in the field of fashion design. The program will emphasize design concepts, sketching, draping, pattern making and garment construction. These skills will enable the student to design and construct a project from creative conception to completion. A lab fee is required for this course.
Students will have the opportunity to explore the world of fashion by developing technical skills and participating in fashion and art events locally. This course will emphasize:
• art and fashion history
• color rendering with pencils and markers
• design concepts and composition
• fashion illustration
• textiles
• fashion public relations and marketing
• design using Photoshop
• flat sketching
• introduction to sewing.
These skills will enable students to understand the fashion industry and career opportunities being offered in the field of fashion design.


Fashion Design 2

Grade: 12 Credits: two Prerequisites: Fashion Design 1 (848027)

The Fashion Design II curriculum will continue to foster and explore the creative process and develop advanced technical skills in the field of fashion design. The student will build on existing skills in the areas of design concepts, sketching, pattern making and garment construction. These skills will enable the student to develop a fashion portfolio and to execute a fashion line from conception to completion. Students will begin to develop a level of professionalism, standard in the industry. A lab fee is required for this course.
Career Course Experiences: Students in the Fashion Design class will have opportunities for
• internships
• volunteering at fashion events
• field trips to An array of Fashion Design Institutes & Art schools, textile museum, New York City Design studios
• fashion show production
• guest speakers from the fashion industry, including designers, artists, and magazine editors.
