An Integrated Service and Learning Model for Citizenship and Responsibility
in the 21st Century

The S.T.A.M.P of Excellence is designed as an integrated service/learning model that incorporates Science, Technology, Art, Music, and Performance studies using available tools and resources within the school to strengthen students’ knowledge of core areas of instruction; identify how these subjects impact their lives and that of the community; assess meaningful ways to shape outcomes that can improve the world around them; and (when appropriate) actively participate in solution-focused behaviors.

The primary objective is targeted around service in the learning community. Students are encouraged to become active decision-makers and problem solvers who understand their connection to the world and respond to issues in their environment.

Please contact Deatema L. Abdul-Latif, Ed. D. at deatema.abdullatif@fcps.edu for more information. Our 3rd annual “Night at the Museum” was a great success. The Inspirational Museum sponsored by the Children’s Philanthropy Center concludes a year of learning and projects showing how students create, reflect, and communicate using the S.T.A.M.P. model.

Our evening began with a tribute to Mr. Wescoat, a long-time community neighbor, volunteer, friend, and Waples Mill ES grandparent. He is an inspiration to our students and all of us. Our school yard arboretum has been dedicated in his name.

Students were also recognized for their volunteerism. Cole, Max, Julia, and Louis were recognized for their participation in the Bike Ride for Cancer Research for the American Cancer Society. Emma organized a drive for athletic shoes to be donated to children in developing countries. Matthew appeared in a televised promotion for Special Olympics. Anna received the CPC award for her time and devotion here at WMES, helping students with multiple disabilities.

Other exhibits and activities enjoyed by students and families included WMES cheerleaders and hip-hop dancers; Lego robots; Rocket Launches and a Moon Base, featuring a visiting astronaut; Astronomy Night with high powered telescopes; and a tour of the WMES outdoor conservation habitat.
