- WMES has been selected as a "School of Excellence" by the Virginia Department of Education. The Virginia School Report Card provides information about student achievement, accountability ratings, attendance, program completion, school safety, teacher quality, and other topics. This award is based on the percentage of student achievement at the advanced level on Standards of Learning assessments and progress made toward educational goals.
On Friday, September 19, Waples Mill ES, participated in a global experience called Chalk4Peace. Chalk4Peace is an organization t hat promotes peace in a unique way. Students are called upon to express their ideas about peace by using chalk to illustrate images and symbols of harmony. There were 100 students ranging from third to sixth grade, 30 parent volunteers, and the Waples Mill PTA. Many thanks to all who participated.
- The November 27 Washington Post reported that half of elementary students in Northern Virginia are scoring . The percentage of schools in our area reaching the highest level on math and reading scores has risen from 30 percent in 2003 to 51 percent this year. Waples Mill ES is ranked 14 of 285 elementary schools reporting SOL results, with 47% Advanced Profiency in 2003 to 71% Advanced Profiency in 2008.
Profiency means that a student meets the core grade level skills and Advanced Proficiency that a student has mastered most or all of the material expected at grade level.
