Welcome to the Sixth grade at Waples Mill Elementary School. We incorporate the middle school concept of changing classes, while still recognizing that the students are in an elementary school environment. The students rotate classes for each subject and adjust to four subjects with four different teachers. Math is divided into two levels, Compacted Math (a 6th/7th/8th grade course) and a Math Six course.
Some 6th Grade highlights include:
InterQuest at the Madeira School in October - a day trip focuses on teambuilding, survival skills and natural habitats
A class trip to one of Washington, DC's art galleries
Simile and Metaphor Day - students dress up as a simile or metaphor and the audience guesses the figure of speech
Pancake Breakfast - a pancake breakfast on the last day of school before Winter Break.
Mt Vernon - a spring trip to George Washington’s home
Trips to Franklin and Lanier Middle Schools as a "pre-orientation" to middle school.
The last week of 6th grade culminates in events such as: Student-run Follies, a Class Picnic, and a Promotion Ceremony.
