Welcome to Physical Education at Waples Mill.

The Waples Mill Elementary physical education curriculum is designed to enhance student confidence in movement, balance, fine and gross motor control as well as overall physical fitness.  Current literature and research indicates that obesity in our society now faces students as well as adults.  Waples Mill PE makes a serious attempt to educate students about the importance of fitness through active, fun activities that students can continue through a lifetime.  As always, your support, guidance and participation in an active lifestyle with your child are always appreciated.

Proper attire for Physical Education Class

For safety and health, proper attire for physical education is required.  Proper attire for physical education class includes the following:

  • Rubber soled running or tennis shoes, laced or Velcro (no Crocs or sandals)
  • Comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement.

Jump Rope for Health and Technology

Jump rope for health and technology is a special event that takes place each year at the end of February.  It is a school-wide fundraiser that raises money to support the technology needs here at Waples Mill Elementary.  Over the past eleven years we have raised over $100,000!

Fifth and Sixth Grade Intramurals

Students in 5th and 6th grade are welcomed to join us at our before-school intramural program.  This program was designed and implemented to give students in the 5th and 6th grade an opportunity before school to get some exercise.  Intramurals are scheduled from November through April during the coldest months when outside exercise is often limited by the harsh winter weather conditions.  This is a free and voluntary program that does not affect students’ PE grade.  Fifth grade intramurals take place every Wednesday morning from 8:15 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.  Sixth grade intramurals take place every Friday morning from 8:15 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.

Fourth Grade Cooking Class

Our 4th grade students have a special opportunity to participate in a cooking class this month. Students will receive a nutrition lesson and they will be involved in a cooking demonstration. Some of the topics that will be covered include: MyPlate, vitamins and minerals, and recipe reading. This lesson will meet the nutrition component of their Family Health Education curriculum. They will also be using Math skills such as estimation, measurements, and fractions, which correlates with SOL Math 4.6 and 4.8. During the lesson, they will split into small groups to make individual pizzas or fresh fruit kabobs (kiwi, strawberries, melons, pineapple). They will also be provided with a workbook with the nutrition information. We are excited to provide our students this unique experience and we hope that it will reinforce the importance of good nutrition.

In compliance with federal law 108-265, Child Nutrition and Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Reauthorization Act of 2004, the Fairfax County School Board adopted a wellness policy to promote student health and contribute to the reduction of childhood obesity. The Office of Food and Nutrition Services in conjunction with the Office of Health and Physical Education, and other affected departments, and with input from parents and students, developed guidelines to implement the policy.
