Welcome to kindergarten at Waples Mill. Using a variety of large group, small group, and individual activities, students develop a love of learning. In language arts communication skills are developed through speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Language Arts is integrated into all developmental areas using journals, fiction and nonfiction books, computers, and a variety of writing opportunities. Kindergarteners enjoy participating in a take-home reading program that gives them the chance to practice the reading skills they acquire at school. An audio-enhancement system increases students’ attention and allows for greater understanding of oral instructions.
In science, students conduct experiments to learn more about colors, ants, the five senses, pumpkins, seasons, magnets, float and sink, and resources.
In math program, students use manipulatives to sort, count, create patterns, tell time, measure, learn about money, and add and subtract numbers. The social studies curriculum focuses on families, important historical people, communities, geography, patriotic symbols, and our place in the world. Students go on an imaginary trip to learn about a variety of customs and traditions celebrated around the world. Some highlights of our kindergarten program include: Dad’s Day, Winter Celebration, Mother’s Spring Tea, field trips, hatching chick eggs, and planting pumpkin seeds in our kindergarten pumpkin patch.
