Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offer a continuum of gifted services for all students in grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Program of Studies. Teachers, administrators, and GT resource teachers work together to provide the following Levels of Service:
Level I GT services provide lessons in critical and creative thinking skills for all FCPS students in grades K-6. Some of the thinking strategies include: questioning, “fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration”, visualization, mind mapping, points of view, analogy, encapsulation, decisions and outcomes, and “plus, minus, and interesting”.
Level II GT services include differentiated instruction at an advanced level for many FCPS students through collaboration between the classroom teacher and the GT resource teacher.
Level III GT services for identified students include the GT school-based program in grades three through six. Students in grades three through five participate in a pullout program on a weekly basis. Opportunities to investigate a curriculum topic in greater depth and breadth and express what has been learned in a variety of ways are provided. For example, the study of watersheds is part of the fourth grade science curriculum. During GT class students learned about how pollution impacts our watersheds. They created skits and songs about this problem and performed them for the entire fourth grade. Students will raise the community level of awareness about watershed pollution by affixing signs to the storm drains and hanging flyers on their neighbors’ doors. Grade five created photo stories after researching and gathering artifacts connected to a variety of cultures. Technology was used to incorporate pictures, music, text, and narration into a visually compelling and informative story. All students in grade six receive GT services on a regular basis through whole class lessons taught by the GT resource teacher.
Level IV GT services are for those students eligible for the full-time GT center program in grades 3-8.
