Welcome to fourth grade at Waples Mill Elementary School. Our fourth graders engage in a variety of activities and experiences as part of our fourth grade curriculum. Language arts, science, and social studies are integrated throughout the day to enable student learning, and special projects, trips, and presentations enrich our curriculum.
Our study of Virginia history and geography is enhanced with field trips to Jamestown, Yorktown, and Gunston Hall, the home of patriot George Mason. Students also dress, play, dance, and learn about life long ago during Colonial Day. Our science curriculum is “hands-on” as we grow plants, build circuits, predict the weather, and visit the planetarium at our local high school to learn more about these topics. In language arts, students read from a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction genre, engage in writing activities for many purposes, and give oral presentations to culminate individual projects. We utilize flexible groups in math to meet students’ individual needs. Technology is also incorporated throughout the year to enrich all of our learning experiences.
Our fourth grade teachers believe in a team approach; we work together and set high expectations for our students. All children, however, have different gifts and talents, and we strive to individualize instruction so that all students can be successful. Fourth grade at Waples Mill is a great place to be!
