Advanced Academic Program |
| |
Students in grades 3 through 6 who have been identified as gifted and talented are given the opportunity to participate in a school-based program at Wakefield Forest. Special direct instruction is provided by a Advanced Academic resource teacher to extend these students' learning. In addition, the Advanced Academic resource teacher provides support to additional students in specific areas of strength. Opportunities for these students may include different content assignments and/or instructional groupings.

Balanced Literacy Program |
| |
Wakefield Forest’s Balanced Literacy Program uses an integrated approach to teaching language arts. Balanced literacy programs are designed to help students become effective readers and writers. Children read and write each day in whole group, small group, and independent settings. Teachers model both the skills and strategies that accomplished readers and writers utilize to comprehend text. At the heart, a balanced literacy program invites students to enjoy and value literacy.

Band Program |
| |
Instruction on band instruments is provided for interested students in grades 5 and 6. Classes meet once a week for a 45 minute period during the school day with itinerant instrumental music teachers. Classes are offered for both beginning and experienced band students. Advanced band students also have the opportunity to perform in the district solo/ensemble festival and participate in Area Band.

Chez Wolf Program |
| |
Chez Wolf is the school-wide cafeteria incentive program designed to promote appropriate cafeteria behavior. The program is a multi-level reward system based on accumulating points. Each class has a weekly goal to achieve and is awarded points daily by the cafeteria hostess.

Courtyard Habitat Program |
| |
The Wakefield Forest courtyard provides students with a place of wonder. The natural surroundings of our courtyard make it a tranquil place for classes to meet and discuss various topics of the curriculum. Science is one of the many subjects that comes to life during each of the four seasons.Each grade level, Kindergarten through Sixth, has a section of the courtyard that correlates with their instructional curriculum. This unique habitat provides an exciting environment to study, play with, and explore. |

Elective Program |
| |
The elective program consists of enrichment activities for our students in grades 5 and 6. Students may choose as many as four different electives which occur over four different sessions throughout the year. Classes meet approximately seven times during each session, weather permitting. Elective classes are held each Monday from 11:40 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. Some of our past offerings have included: chess, foreign languages, team sports, morning new production, philosophy, chorus, art studio, and more.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program |

The ESOL program provides the academic foundation and English literacy that ESOL students need to meet the challenges of the real world. Character Education Program |
| |
Wakefield Forest’s Human Relations Committee developed and implemented the Kids with Character program, which consists of many components. School-wide quarterly themes -- Respect, Responsibility, Kindness, and Citizenship -- are integrated into various school activities: class curriculum, monthly newsletters created by fifth and sixth grade students in the weekly Kids with Character elective class, the Chez Wolf positive behavior incentive lunch program, weekly class meetings, character theme song of the quarter, and peer mediation workshops for student patrols.

Morning News Program |
| |
WFES Eyewitness Morning News is the morning news program at Wakefield Forest. It airs every day on our closed-circuit channel 6 at 8:35 AM. Sixth graders apply for positions on the news show, and new crew and cast members are selected monthly by WFES Morning News advisor, Ms. Mostacciuolo. The crew members operate the camera and the computer as well as the audio mixer and the digital video mixer. There is a director who is in charge of the production. News anchors lead the Pledge of Allegiance, announce the lunch, discuss the weather, wish happy birthdays and read any announcements. Sometimes there are special announcements made by the administration or other Wakefield Forest staff members. WFES Eyewitness News is a great way to start the day at Wakefield Forest!

School Age Child Care (SACC) |
| |
School Age Child Care (SACC) is a Fairfax County Office for Children program located in FCPS elementary schools for Kindergarten through 6th grade children whose parents are working, attending school, or disabled. The SACC program is designed to develop independent thinking, creative expression, and cooperative relationships among children. SACC offers three separate programs at Wakefield Forest: Before School (7:15AM until school begins), After Kindergarten (end of morning kindergarten until end of the regular school day), and After School (end of school day until 6:15PM).

School Psychologist Program |
| |
Wakefield Forest is served by a school psychologist who works with several schools. The psychologist administers diagnostic tests and psychological evaluations to assist in special education and program placement. In addition, the psychologist is available for consultations and conferences.

School Social Worker Program |
| |
Wakefield Forest is served by a social worker. The social workers meet with parents of students who are being considered for special programs. In addition, the social worker assists families, teachers, and students in identifying and resolving emotional, social, and behavioral problems that interfere with academic performance.

Speech and Language Program |
| |
The speech and language pathologist provides services directed toward remediation of problems in oral language, articulation, voice, and fluency. Students receive assistance individually and/or in small groups, at all grade levels. In addition, the speech and language pathologist routinely screens all students in grade K through 3, that are new to Wakefield Forest, to assess speech and language development.

Strings Program |
| |
All 4th, 5th and 6th graders are invited to learn to play a string instrument at Wakefield Forest. Students are given information about the four instruments, violin, viola, cello and bass, in September and may select one instrument. Beginners will learn proper instrument position and note reading, and how to produce a good sound. Advanced 5th and 6th graders will perform string orchestra music from a variety of styles and time periods. These advanced students also have the opportunity to join Fairfax Area Orchestra and participate in Solo and Ensemble Festival.
