9th Grade Planning

Planning and preparing for the future begins early. This is an ongoing process that includes investigating self, career options, and post-secondary options.

9th Grade Career Activities
Counselors meet with students in small groups in the early fall. This Freshman Orientation focuses on the transition to high school. Balancing the adjustment to block scheduling, additional course work/expectations, and added social pressures are discussed. Additional topics include the role of the guidance counselor, graduation and SOL requirements, functions of the Career Center, availability of after school help, clubs, and activities. Discussion groups that provide a forum to share feelings, thoughts and experiences are also offered.

9th Grade Goals for career and post-secondary preparation

Students may want to:

Talk with your parents, teachers, and friends about your likes and dislikes and your personal characteristics.
Review requirements for certain careers/colleges/specialized schools or the military.
Visit your school career center and local library.
Discuss job information with people who are currently in a field which is of interest to you.

Talk with college students who are currently taking courses in a field which is of interest to you.

Consider career goals in selecting classes.

Meet with your guidance counselor. Find out if you are "on track."

Start and keep a portfolio of academic and extracurricular activities.

Think about career possibilities. Find out what the career is really involves and what education it requires. The Career Center is an invaluable source of information.
Find out what NCAA or NAIA requires if you want to play sports in college.
