Ami Schroder, Librarian ~ Ann Timmins, Library Assistant
Visit the library often! BE A READER, A RESEARCHER AND A LEARNER!! We have a large collection of both fiction and nonfiction books, and magazines too, for assignments, research and your reading pleasure. Please do your part to help keep it easy for everyone to find books: Never re-shelve a book in the wrong place. If you don't remember where it belongs, put it in the book return or on a table.
ONLINE CATALOGS (OLCs):
Books may be looked up by author, title, subject or keyword on any of our OLCs. Be sure to copy down the call number and check to see if it is available before going to look for a book.
eBooks:
FCPS subscribes to two eBooks sites for students. Tumblebooks/Tumblereadables and MyOn.com are both great sites to read books online. Books are available in a variety of subjects and for a variety of reading levels. Login and Password information for these eBooks (as well as for online databases) can be found on the library web page on FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard).

CHECK-OUTS:
Each student has a library card which is kept at the circulation desk. Kindergarten students may check out one book at a time first semester and then two books at a time second semester. Grades 1-6 practice a "Take as many books as you need" policy. The stipulations on this policy are that you can only check out as many books as you can carry by yourself, no more than two books in a series/by the same author (and in cases of extrememly popular books only one such as Guinness Book of World Records) and in order to keep checking out books you may not have outstanding overdue books over a month old. The normal check-out period is two weeks, and checkouts may be renewed unless an item has holds on it. Some reference books (including encyclopedias) may be checked out late in the school day for overnight use. |
READING:
Look for our "New Books" display for the newest reading! In addition, book suggestions may be entered on the Book Blog on the library page in FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard). A suggestion list is kept at the circulation desk. You may
write down the title of any book you think would be a good addition to the library.
There is also a board where students may share good reading recommendations.

RESEARCH:
In addition to a wide variety of nonfiction and reference books and audiovisual materials, the library has access to several excellent online databases that FCPS has subscribed to, such as World Book Online and Grolier Online (see links above). They are bookmarked on the library computers. These sites may be accessed from home as well as from school. Logins and passwords are available on the FCPS 24/7 library page (Blackboard). Feel free to ask for help if you are having trouble getting the information you need. |
AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS:
Audiotapes, videotapes, DVDs, CDs, CD-ROMs and videodiscs are available for teacher check-out only.
DIGITAL AUDIOBOOKS:
The UMES library now has digital audiobooks called Playaways. These are digital versions of popular literature that students can listen to using headphones/earbuds. They can be found by searching the library online catalog using the word, Playaway. Currently these digital audiobooks may only be checked out by students in grades 4-6. Due to the overwhelming demand for Playaways, they may not be renewed and a student is allowed only one Playaway at a time.
