Title I Family Involvement Policy
for
Timber Lane Elementary School
Fairfax County Public Schools’ Title I program is established to improve student achievement and help all students meet the objectives of the Fairfax County Program of Studies and Virginia Standards of Learning.
To assure that this goal is met, a partnership with families is essential. Therefore, Timber Lane Elementary School commits to working in partnership with families in the following ways:
* Develop a welcoming environment for all families by:
o Having Signs and posters around the building translated into different languages
o Bi-lingual office staff will be available to greet families when they come into school
o Provide translations for all communication home especially in Spanish
o Translators will be provided at all school events, parent conferences, and phone calls home when needed
o A parent liaison is available throughout the school day to assist families in communicating with school or to help with county resources
o Conduct quarterly social events to encourage parent involvement such as the Ice Cream Social, and Cookies and Cider night.
* Establish a Parent Outreach Committee (POC) to plan events and informational workshops to better meet the needs of our parents so they can successfully be involved in their child’s education.
* Provide professional development and educational opportunities for the families by
o Expanding Parenting Center to provide more resources for parents to include: educational books and videos and upgraded computers for parents use.
o Conduct a parent survey each spring to establish parent interest in topics for parenting workshops to be conducted the following year. Conduct monthly parent workshops based on survey results from parents.
o Conduct ESOL adult classes in the evenings for our community and families.
o Conduct computer classes for adults once a week during the school year
* Inform parents at Back-to-School-Night and Kindergarten Orientation in the spring that Timber Lane is a Title I School and distribute the School-Home Compact.
* Hold an annual parent meeting in the fall to present in detail what being a Title I school means and explain all the resources available to us because Timber Lane is a Title I School.
* Work with the PTA to sponsor an annual International Night for the families and community as an opportunity to celebrate our wonderful diversity
* Encourage parents to become active members of the PTA and participate in or volunteer at various school events during the year.
* Provide transportation (school bus) for families when events occur away from the school such as the faculty basketball game, library nights, and the family science night.
* Communicate with families on a regular basis regarding their child’s progress in school. This communication will include but will not be limited to: parent conferences, weekly progress reports in Wednesday folders, grade level newsletters bi-weekly or monthly, e-mails, phone calls, interims, and homework planners in grades 3-6.
* Provide parents with school profile information and individual student assessment results on standardized tests such as SOL, DRA, NNAT, and CoGat.
* Maintain a clothes closet to meet the needs of our struggling families
* Develop, in consultation with families, a School/Home Compact, stating what each party will do to share the responsibility for high student achievement. We will review the compact annually with families and staff.
* Have at least one parent on our School Plan committee.
