Thoreau Middle School

Mission Statement

Henry David Thoreau Middle School is named after the great American author, poet and philosopher.  A famous quote of Henry David Thoreau is “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams.”  Thoreau Middle School strives to embody the spirit of that great statement by fostering an academic environment in which all children will be stretched to their highest levels of academic achievement.  To ensure that students are continually challenged and that all teachers are refining their craft, Thoreau Middle School has adopted the philosophy of the Professional Learning Community (PLC) model. Different from the traditional school model, the PLC model is one where teachers work together, rather than in isolation, to seek out best teaching practices for imparting learning to students.

At Thoreau Middle School, we are a results-oriented school with a shared vision, common values, and achievable goals; a community of collaborative teams focused on student learning, best practices, and formative assessment; committed to continuous improvement; committed to stretching all children so that each one learns at the highest possible level; and we are committed to having every student feel competent and capable of learning.
