Northern Virginia Math League:

The Northern Virginia Math League contests are offered each month from October to March. Students are encouraged to try the each 6 problem contest and learn more about problem solving strategies in mathematics. Students can attend one or all six of the monthly contests.

Photo Up!:

An introduction to photography.  Students will learn various techniques and skills needed to take a perfect photo.  Students will decide on different ways to exhibit their creative works.

Guitar Club is for students who have some knowledge of how to play the guitar and would like to get together with other students and play.  Improve your technique, learn new chords, swap songs.  Electrics or acoustics are welcome.  Instruments can be stored in the office during the day.

An after school program that incorporates academics, recreation and other activities to keep students engaged in positive and productive programs during after school hours. Each day will include some time to study or get homework help, a nutritious snack, recreation and youth development programming.

*Students must register in order to participate

*Late buses are not provided so parents are required to pick

  up students promptly at 5pm.

Drama Club:

We play Theatre games, discuss plays, learn to use special effects makeup, and even work on short plays.  There is an opportunity for everyone to participate, even if you are not a performer, you can learn about all the non-performing aspects of Theatre like props, lights, scenery, etc.  We also spend some time on exploring the film industry. 

Drama Club will meet until late buses arrive or parent pick up.

Forensic Science Club:

Want to be a crime scene investigator?  Over the course of 15 weeks students will engage in the analysis of hair and pollen samples, fiber samples, and learn about DNA profiling.

Italian Outside the Textbook:

Lezione D'Italiano. Experience the language and the culture of Italy using authentic illustrations and realia.  Fun and engaging lessons encourage the use of oral and written communication, and reading.  For beginners.

Interested in playing soccer, football, or basketball?  Open to all students.  Students must sign up outside Ms. Polk’s office by 2:30 in order to participate.  Appropriate attire is required. 

Students are required to be under adult supervision from 2:35-3:30 before intramurals begin.  Students may stay with a teacher or participate in an after-school activity.

Foreign Language Club: 

We seek to familiarize students with aspects of the French and Spanish cultures.  We hope to provide a venue for the exploration and discovery of the student’s interests.  We will be cooking foreign fare, watching foreign films (subject to parent and county approval, of course), viewing travel videos, having in depth history lessons, learning songs/dances (both traditional and modern), viewing art, etc.

Recycling:

The Recycling Club takes responsibility for modeling earth-friendly living here at Thoreau.  Last year we recycled paper and cardboard every Thursday afternoon.  8th graders who join the Recycling Club earn hours each week toward their community service requirement for Civics class.  We provide kids with a place to learn responsibility and accountability, as well as a hands-on experience of helping our community one trashcan at a time!
