Math Superstars Celebrate at Outback Steakhouse
By Mrs. Sogandares

Math Superstars is Terraset's math enrichment program run by a very committed team of PTA volunteers. During the school year, students in Grades 1-6 receive weekly math worksheets containing about 7-8 word problems that challenge a student to read carefully and critically, think logically, and apply advanced math principles to a variety of situations. While the worksheets are intended to complement the curricular focus of each grade, the problems are more advanced applications of what children are learning in the classroom. This program provides a meaningful and worthwhile enrichment to the existing curriculum.

Each week, students submit their finished worksheets for grading by the volunteers, and points are achieved for correct answers. In all cases, partial credit is given to students who show their work and who can demonstrate some measure of accuracy in their answers. Incentive prizes are given when students achieve certain point totals; at the end of the year, the top math students are invited to attend a luncheon generously donated by Outback Steakhouse of Herndon.

The program is voluntary; however, each year more and more children participate. In some cases, teachers support the program by working through problems in the classroom. In others, teachers support the program by careful distribution of the worksheets and by reminding their students to turn their work in on time. In most cases, teachers respond to the program favorably, explaining that the word problems help students think differently and apply their knowledge in an interesting and challenging manner.

Math Superstars was developed by a high school math teacher in Florida, where it was named Sunshine Math. Terraset is fortunate to have PTA, faculty and administrative support of this program. Because of its year-long focus and the heavy requirement of weekly grading, Math Superstars is not run in most elementary schools. Terraset is the only elementary school in Cluster 8, and one of only 5 in the county, that offers this program.
