Tech Team Makes Commercialtechteamgroup
by Max G., Son H., Kara N., and Todd S.
Grade 6

On Saturday, January 24, the four members of Terraset's Tech team went with Ms. Dix on a field trip to the Sprague Center for Technology in Annandale for a hands-on video production workshop. Kara said, "I thought it was one of the best experiences I can remember."

Neither Ms. Dix, nor the tech team students knew what to expect. "I expected it to be a place where a lot of nerds hang out and a whole lot of technical computers and things like that. But, it was not. It was just kids like me that like technology," said Todd. The team was tasked to make a 30-second commercial for a contest called Video Fairfax run by the the Arts Council of Fairfax County. There were seven groups from various schools in the county that were paired with someone with professional experience in making and editing video segments.

techteamSon said, "The hardest part was choosing the sound from a compact disc and getting it into the movie." Not only did the team have to star in the video, but they also had to do all the behind-the-scenes work, too, like brainstorm a concept for the commercial, write a storyboard and a script, and choose music to complement the video. Max "thought the hardest part was planning what to do."

While the workshop went from 9am - 3pm, time seemed to fly. "The hardest part was trying to get the movie done in the little bit of time we had," Todd said. However, Kara thought "the hardest part about going to Video Fairfax was trying not to laugh when we were acting."
