Fourth Grade travels to Jamestown, VA

by Ryan D., grade 4

The fourth grade was up bright and early on April 23, 2009, and ready for a three hour trip to Jamestown. When we got there, the first thing we participated in was “How the Ships Made it to Jamestown.”  Three people from Mrs. Stevens class (Jordan, Victoria, and Imani) were chosen to act as the three ships to show the route they took. So, after that we visited the Powhatan Indian village.

The first activity we were asked to do was grinding corn into meal. We learned that the Powhatan children under the age of six played a game that would help with their aim when they moved on to use their bow and arrows in the wildlife. Their houses were made from reeds and sapling. We walked through and saw how they would live and learned that the children slept on the dirt floor until they married and then they could sleep on the bed made from deer skin. We saw and participated in how the Powhatan Indians would make a canoe by burning out the inside and scraping out the ash from the inside with oyster shells. When we finished the Powhatan Indians, we went down to the Jamestown ships.

The first one we went on, and the only one we went on, was the Godspeed. In the Godspeed’s ‘tween deck we sat and listened to a speech on what the boat was probably like in 1607.

After the boats, we hurried back and through the chapel where Pocahontas married John Rolfe, which was beautiful. The reason for all of this hurrying is because we wanted to make it to the musket shot.

We saw the musket fired twice (by a woman) and the stage was so crowded, but she wasn’t firing the bullet that day (Thursday).

Later we rode out to the Golden Coral. The Golden Coral is a buffet with all the kinds of food you can imagine. They had fish, hot dogs, spaghetti, great drinks, and all kinds of good stuff. But the dessert table was probably everyone’s favorite. On the dessert table there was German chocolate, cakes, brownies, cupcakes, ice cream, and cookies. Whoever is going next year is in for a lot of fun.

All fourth grade students got up around 5:30 am to go on the Jamestown trip. Everyone gathered at the school to load the busses at 6:00. We watched movies and played games on the way to Jamestown. We talked to our friends until the bus stopped at Jamestown. When we got off the bus at Jamestown, our legs were very tired from sitting down.

We met our tour guide and went off to the tour. Our gour guide showed us the map of how settlers got to Jamestown. We walked to the Indian village and went into an Indian hut and saw different types of fur on the walls and tools and baskets hanging off the roof. Outside the hut we saw a woman cooking in an outdoor kitchen. The smoke from the fire got in our eyes and mouth.

We went down a path that led to the James River and saw the Jamestown Island. On the river there were three boats: The Susan Constant, The God Speed, and the Discovery. We went down to the 'tween deck and a man told us what it was like to sit down there for days. Then we saw a cannon being made. We helped scrape off the burned bark.

We went inside a huge fort. We saw a woman shoot a musket. She told us how long it takes to load it. When she shot the musket, it hurt our ears. We went inside a church. We read the Lord's Prayer. Near the church we went into a tobacco house. The tobacco didn't smell that good. Then we went inside a house. Five men including Captain Smith lived in it. When the tour was over, we went to see a movie in the Governor's theater about Jamestown.

We went inside the gift shop so that we could buy a souvenir from Jamestown. We got back on the bus for 20 to 30 minutes to get to the Golden Corral for lunch. The Golden Corral is a buffet restaurant. We got back on the bus for about three hours and played games and watched movies and talked to friends. By the time we got home, it was 5:30 pm. We said goodbye to our friends and then we went home.
