Sunrise Valley Elementary School and Milestone Communications

Sunrise Valley Elementary School and Milestone Communications have been partners for over 10 years. During that time they have enjoyed many opportunities to gather together as a community, as a school, and at different grade levels with Milestone.
Milestone Communications has hosted the staging area for Sunrise Valley Annual Spring 5K walk/run, sponsored by the PTA and in conjunction with Sunrise Valley Character Education Committee. Many families participate in this event, and School Board members and Fairfax County Supervisors attend. Funds raised have been donated to such charities as: the Make a Wish Foundation and HopeCam. Together with the PTA, Milestone also funded the weather station for Sunrise Valley, which can be used by the whole school, as well as serving as a hot link from our school web site for the community.
Milestone has sponsored assemblies in conjunction with the second grade study of the wetlands and the sixth grade study of the solar system. Billy B entertained the whole school and focused on the environment.
In addition, Milestone arranged for the second grade students to visit the wetlands in Reston, and they learned first hand, from hydrologists and soil experts, the importance of these areas. An arborist visited first graders at the school, and brought trees to plant and saplings for each child. The children were able to watch and discuss how soil is prepared for the planting of a tree, and to see the cherry tree planted. On receiving their saplings, students learned more about how trees grow and how they could plant their saplings at home. This was a perfect complement to their study of trees in the science curriculum.
Milestone has also sponsored students who are homebound and set up the use of HopeCam to keep these students in contact with their classmates and teachers at school.
Milestone has provided Sunrise Valley students and families with many resources, and everyone at the school is looking forward to the continued partnership with Milestone.
