Weather Station Instruments

Teacher created weather chart

Air Temperature Thermometers measure air temperature both outside SVES (on roof) and inside SVES (in library)
Precipitation Rain Gauge measures the amount of rain (or snow).

The SVES precipation readout is the number of inches it has rained TODAY, as well as keeping track of how many total inches it has rained this MONTH and this YEAR.

Wind Direction

Wind Vane or Wind Sock
(looks like a small airplane at the top of the SVES roof station) measures the direction from which the wind is blowing.

Wind Speed

Anemometer measures wind speed to find out how fast the wind is moving (in mph or knots).

Air Pressure

Barometer measures air pressure.
It gives us the weight of the air.

Humidity

Psychrometer measures humidity.
The humidity percent tells us how much water vapor is in the air.
Dew Point Dew point wet bulb is used to measure the temperature to which the air must be cooled to become saturated. The wet bulb temperature is used to compute dew point and relative humidity.

Wind Chill and Heat Index

The wind chill index takes the effects of the wind and temperature on the body. It describes how cold it feels.

The heat index is a combination of air temperature and humidity that describes how warm it feels.
