STUART'S CAREER CENTER - MILITARY OPTIONS
The United States military provides students with opportunities for career training and education. For many students, this is a viable option when funding for a four-year/two-year education isn't an option. All military career training and educational programs do require time and training that has lifetime rewards as well as restrictions. All signed contracts should be read carefully and make sure to involve parents, school counselors, and other adults to help make decisions that have long-range implications.
ACADEMIES
The Army, Navy, Air Force, and the Coast Guard have colleges (or academies) in which the students are trained to be military leaders. These academies are extremely selective and require special nomination from your Congressman and/or the President of the United States. If you are interested in this route, you must begin the process in the Spring of your Junior Year.
ROTC PROGRAM
Students can attend certain four-year colleges in which they can study the major of their choice as well as military leadership in the realm of Reserve Officer Training (ROTC). ROTC scholarships and monthly stipends are also available to students who qualify.
ENLISTMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Students can "join" the Army, Air Force, Navy, National Guard, Marines, or the Coast Guard by applying and meeting their requirements. All students must take and pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) consisting of verbal, mathematical, and technical questions regardless of which military branch they want to enter. Each military branch has their own requirements.
- Air Force = Required minimum ASVAB score = 36
- Army = Required minimum ASVAB score = 31
- Coast Guard = Required minimum ASVAB score = 45
- Navy = Required minimum ASVAB score = 35
- Marines = Required minimum ASVAB score = 31
It's worth visiting Military.com that walks you through an overview of all military branches as well as what as the requirements for all branches.
