Steve Schlaseman and Grayson Smith both made the bands, with Grayson receiving the highest score for the entire state on his instrument! Francis Kinney and Courtney Bullock were both selected as alternates. Congratulations to all of you! (3/3/08) FBLA Team Wins RegionalCongratulations to FBLA members Gustavo Castillo, Jennifer Banh and Yasantha Perera - First Place Winners in the FBLA regional - global business competition. The team will advance to compete at the state level in April. (3/6/08) Muslim Student Inter-Scholastic Tournament ResultsLast weekend, 12 Stuart students competed in the Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament at the University of Maryland. Myra Shah competed in debate and made it through the second round; Yunos Amireh participated in the Math Olympics and made it through the second round. The short film created by a team of students organized by Houdayfah Kaddoura placed. Manal Sorour, Asma Elfatesi, Nada Osman, Maphase Abu-Sharakh, and Nora Abdullah competed in the Scholastic Bowl and made it through the semi-finals. The Brothers Nasheed and Rap duo of Yunos Amireh and Ebadullah Ebadi finished third out of 27 teams who attended. And the team of Nora Abdullah, Maphase Abu-Sharakh, Sahar Abu-Sharakh, Myra Shah, and Manal Sorour won the Sisters Nasheed and Rap competition, prevailing over 26 other teams. Congratulations to all who competed! (3/6/08) Outstanding Musical Achievements by Stuart HSThis has been an extraordinary week in the Stuart music department. Last Tuesday, the Madrigal Chamber Singers received a Superior rating at the District Choir Festival - this is the highest rating available. Then, this past weekend, the Symphonic Orchestra and the Concert Orchestra both received Superior ratings at their District Festival, and the Wind Ensemble and Concert Band both received Superior ratings at their District Festival. This incredible string of successes means two things - first, our band department has been named a Virginia Honor Band for the third year in a row; a huge honor. Secondly, for the third time in Stuart High School history, our school has been named a "Blue Ribbon School" for music, meaning our entire music department performs at the highest level. This is the highest honor possible for a public school music department in the state. A huge congratulations to all of the members of our phenomenal music department - you make Stuart proud. Some Important Reminders from the Career CenterSeniors: The workshop for Seniors planning to apply to Northern Virginia Community College has been postponed until Monday at 2:15 in the Career Center. If you are planning to apply to NOVA and will not be able to make the workshop please see Mrs. Kelley for important application information. Seniors: Many of you are and will be receiving application decisions from colleges and Scholarship programs. Please share those decisions with Mrs. Kelley in the Career Center and/or with your guidance counselor. Seniors you may have noticed community members visiting your English Classes- Starting Friday, March 7 you will be able to pick up an application for the JEB Stuart Foundation Scholarship. These are NEED based scholarships which are given to graduating seniors from JEB Stuart. Last year almost $60,000 was given to members of the class of 2007, and we expect to award a similar amount to this year’s class. If you need money for college you should apply! Juniors- Please read the email from Mrs. Kelley, to learn about College Fairs, Registering for the SAT and ACT tests and special open house programs at local colleges. If you did not receive this email make sure you current email address is in Blackboard. Reminder: Juniors planning to take the APRIL 12 ACT should register by Friday, March 7. The J.E.B. Stuart High School ESOL 1B classes took a field trip to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History on Wednesday, February 27. They visited the Hall of Mammals, saw the IMAX “Sea Monsters” and toured the museum with parent liaison Marcia Donovan and their teachers, Lisa DeHart, Melissa Duprat and Dale Whitesell. (3/4/08) Exceptional ArtThe Scholastic Art & Writing Awards offer early recognition of creative teenagers and scholarship opportunities for graduating high-school seniors. This year there were over 1500 entries in the Fairfax Region and over 10,000 entries in the nation. A distinguished panel of professional artists and art faculty from local colleges and universities judged them. We are proud to announce the 14 Stuart artists who won awards this year. Our Gold and Silver awards winners are: Madeleine Ahlborn, Emma Beltran, William Blackmore, Ze Huang, Thomas Lau, Crystal Moreno, Jordan Gilmore, Adam Van Vliet. Students receiving Certificates of Merit are: Anna Cabrera, Crystal Hermano , Raymond Hurley, and Dat Vu. The Gold and Silver winning artworks are currently showcased in an exhibit at NVCC’s Annandale Campus until February 21. In addition, the Gold winning artworks compete nationally in New York. Wish Madeleine, Emma, William, Ze, Thomas, and Crystal luck! (2/20/08) Wrestling Wrap-UpCongratulations to the Wrestling Team, Stuart sent nine wrestlers to the Northern Region Tournament last weekend and earned one medal. Christian Gore wrestled his way to 5th Place in one of the toughest weight classes in the state. Christian is a state qualifier alternate and may wrestle in the state tournament at Oscar Smith HS in Chesapeake this weekend. Christian Finished his senior year with an astounding 34 and 4 record! Stuart Teacher Earns National CertificateOrchestra teacher Cassandra Strange has completed the requirements of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards license. Ms. Strange is one of the first performing arts teachers in the county to have earned this distinction and we are proud to have her working with our talented students. Please be sure to congratulate her on her accomplishment. (2/7/08) Wrestlers on Their Way to Regionals!Congratulations to the J.E.B. Stuart Wrestlers that qualified for the Virginia Regional Tournament this upcoming weekend. Stuart Young Democrats, Young Republicans, and the Social Studies Department sponsored a Presidential Primary Information Forum. Mr. Eric Welch was the teacher sponsor of the event and all campaigns were given the opportunity to send representatives to answer questions. Official representatives from Clinton, Obama, and Paul's campaigns came and presented their candidate in this forum. Good work Young Democrats, Young Republicans, and Social Studies Departments - and especially Mr. Welch for taking lead on this project. For Extemporaneous Speaking in Domestic Affairs--Kalkidan Berhanu won second place in the district, Jesse Richardson won a third place medal. For Extemporaneous Speaking in Foreign Affairs--Binta Jammeh won first Place and Asha Noor won a third place medal. For Original Oratory--Robert Lewis won first place in the district for the second year in a row and Ahmed Elkheshin won second place. In Impromptu Speaking--Brian Le is the District Champion. For Storytelling--Ayan Warsame won a Second Place Medal. For Prose Interpretation--Vita P won second place. In Poetry Interpretation--Rayan Izzeldin is the District Champion and Hinna Tariq took home the second place medal. For Serious Dramatic Interpretation--Ally Dreiman is the District Champion. For Humorous Dramatic Inerpretation--Johnetta Saygbe took home the second place medal. And For Duo Interpretation--The team of Andrew VanVladricken and Ahmed Mohammed are the District Champions and the team of Houdayfah Kaddoura and Giovanna Moya took home the Second Place Medal! Way to Go NATIONAL DISTRICT CHAMPIONS in Forensics--JEB STUART SPEECH AND DEBATE!! (2/7/08) Swim and DiveWhat a great season for the Stuart Swim and Dive Team. Overall, the boys took 4th place in the district and the girls took 3rd. 13 swimmers and 2 divers competed in the regional meet and one swimmer, Joey Connor, will compete this week in the state meet. The team had a school-record breaking year with Bobby Horton breaking the record for dive, Joey Connor tying the record for the 100 free, and Deniz Babaoglu, Steven Lane, Francis Kinney, and Joey Connor breaking the record for the 400 free relay. At the regional meet the relay team beat their time, breaking the record yet again. The girls 400 medley relay (Linda Womack, Callie Hyder, Rachel Dady, and Nichole Friday) made it to the finals, beating their best time, and missing the record by only .02 seconds. Others who competed at regionals were: Chris Zapple – 100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, and 200 Medley relay; Anne Dutilh 200 Free relay; Caren Lecos 200 Free relay; Casey Schulman 200 Free relay; Nora Snee 200 Free relay;Ryan Herron Dive. (2/7/08) Indoor Track in ActionIB Business Stock Market Game Award WinnersFor the past 10 weeks, Mrs. Shannahan and Mrs. Kochan's IB Business classes participated in the "Stock Market Game" along with over 1100 teams throughout the state of Virginia. The SMG is an on-line simulation sponsored by the Foundation for Investor Education in which the students invest an imaginary $100,000 in stocks of their choice. The students earned points in various categories including highest rate of return, top Stuart state and regional ranking. The overall winning class was Mrs. Kochan's 3rd period SL class racking up 222 points followed by Mrs. Shannahan's SL 4th period class with 171 points. Prizes, provided by Apple Federal Credit Union, were presented to the winning teams. The Stock Market Game™ is a trademark of the Foundation for Investor Education. Any student who is a citizen of the United States, is a Fairfax County resident, is classified as a senior in a Fairfax County public high school or secondary school, and plans to attend a two-or-four-year accredited U.S. college or university is eligible to apply. The decision was based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, financial need, and a 500 word essay. We are very happy for and proud of Rayan for earning this wonderful scholarship! Stuart Recognized as one of the Nation's Best!In the November 29 edition of U.S. News and World Report, we learned that J.E.B. Stuart was recognized as one of the nation's Best High Schools for 2008! U.S. News & World Report—in collaboration with School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education and data research and analysis business that provides parents with education data on schoolmatters.com — analyzed academic and enrollment data from more than 18,000 public high schools to find the very best across the country. These top schools were placed into gold, silver, or bronze medal categories. Stuart received a 'bronze' ranking for how well we do in educating our students, making us one of the nation's top schools! It is wonderful to receive outside recognition of what we already know at Stuart - the Stuart Community is doing a great job educating our students! (10/17/07) PSAT ResultsThe PSAT test results will be distributed to all students who took the test on Monday, December 10th during first block. On Monday December 10th during PLC time all sophomores are invited to the Little Theater to attend a presentation on the PSAT score reports. The presentation will be made available to Juniors on Monday December 17, during the PLC period. (12/7/07) All District BandCongratulations to the Stuart band students who auditioned for the All-District Bands on Saturday, December 8. These groups are very selective, and we were honored to have twelve students selected for participation, as well as five alternates. Interact Club
The Interact Club is the J.E.B. Stuart High School's Bailey's Crossroads Rotary Club Affiliate. It has three co-sponsors who serve at the pleasure of our Principal Pam Jones, namely: Dean of Students Chuck Lord, James Holcombe, & Molly Lord. Last Friday, 11/23/07, Mr. Holcombe was made an honorary member of the Bailey's Rotary Chapter. Last year, the Bailey's Chapter named Mr. Holcombe 'The 2006-07 'Citizen of the Year'. In 2005, the Stuart Interact Club was the Mason-District nominee for 'Service Club of the Year and eventually became the Fairfax County & Volunteers Fairfax's 'Service Club of the Year'. This year's event's began early---that is, last summer. Interact's President Neelma Qureshi & Michelle Choeung attended the Rotary sponsored Chesapeake Bay Microbiology Camp. So far during this school year, the Interact Club has carried out three week-end activities: (1) Adopt-A-Highway (…we cleaned up Route 7 with Bailey's Rotarians); (2) Annandale Parade (Mr. Holcombe, Norma Requeno-Campos, Hadil Al-Yamani--along with the Bailey's Rotarians--gave away candy to children); (3) Thanksgiving Meals Give-Away (…Safeway, the Bailey's Rotary Club, and Stuart's Interact Club delivered approximately 70 meals to the most needy in our Community before Thanksgiving). In all, over 120 Stuart Interact members and alumni---have participated in these week-end activities!!! Thank you for your wonderful spirit of giving and service! (12/3/07) Students Chosen from StuartCongratulations to Robert Lewis and Shanana Islam, they have been chosen to participate in the Fairfax County Youth Leadership Program. (12/7/07) Wrestling Success!HUGE Success for J.E.B. Stuart! We took 3rd place as a team (out of 11) and had 8 athletes place in the tournament. We also sent five wrestlers to the finals! We also earned our first team trophy in almost 2 decades. Most Brackets had 8 or more wrestlers. Our team wrestled very hard and beat very good wrestlers from the region. Stuart FCPS Students Selected for William & Mary Leadership AwardsTwenty-four students from Fairfax County Public Schools - including J.E.B. Stuart's own Rachel Dady - were nominated for the College of William and Mary Leadership Award, which recognizes students who demonstrate leadership both in the classroom and in their communities. (11/29/07) Excellent Singing!CONGRATULATIONS TO EMMA EARNEST, who has been selected for The American Choral Directors Association Southern Region High School Honors Choir! The ACDA will hold its regional conference in Louisville, Kentucky this March. Emma will join singers from Louisiana, Kentucky, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas, to participate in this select ensemble. WAY TO GO, EMMA! (12/3/07) Dance TeamCongratulations to your JEB Stuart Dance Team! This past weekend, dancers Cherelle Ford and Jessica Jackson-Banks placed second in the small group competition and the hip-hop performance was up for third place with a one-point difference in scores. Their coaches, parents, and friends were very proud of their performances this weekend and are looking forward to their last performance for their season this Friday at the pep rally. Go Dance Team! (12/3/07) Electronic DevicesWe strongly encourage students to leave all electronic devices at home to reduce theft of such devices. No electronic device(s) should be visible or in operation from when a student enters the building until the bell rings to end the school day. There are no exceptions to this policy. If a school staff member sees any such device, they will confiscate the device and issue the student a receipt. The electronic device is stored in a secure location until a parent or guardian comes to school to retrieve the item. Items may be retrieved by parents/guardians by coming to the main office between the hours of 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM during a normal school day. Thank you for you help! (10/12/07)

J.E.B. Stuart Students Shadow DISA EmployeesJ.E.B. Stuart would like to thank DISA, one of our two school/business partners, for hosting eleven of our students on a job shadowing day! The students were paired up with a DISA employee and learned about what it takes to make it. The students left their on-the-job experience excited about what they saw, heard, and learned as well as thinking differently about their futures. The DISA coordinator was very complimentary of their attitudes, conduct, and appearance - her people were impressed! We have to agree that we do have great students - and it is a great looking group! (11/15/07) Nancy Svendsen MemorialThe PTSA generously donated time, effort and money to landscape a portion of our school in memory of Ms. Svendsen. ESOL students pitched in along with numerous PTSA parents to mulch and plant trees, shrubs, and grasses. Thank you for this beautiful garden spot so prominently placed at the front of our school in memory of this much loved teacher. (11/12/07) Veterans' Day Observance SpeakersToday at J.E.B. Stuart High School, we were fortunate to have a group of veterans come into our building to help us remember and honor our Vets. From left to right they are: Dean Tistadt (67), Lee Portine, William McIntyre ('66);Rodney Green ('66),Dennis Garbis ('66), and Walter Cahill ('67). All but Lee Portine graduated from J.E.B. Stuart HS in the years indicated. These veterans, all with Vietnam era service, presented perspectives on the Vietnam War with IB Topics and AVID students. In addition to the talk and discussion, J.E.B. Stuart High School Principal Mrs. Pamela A. Jones accepted a plaque presented to her naming those from Stuart High School who gave their lives during their service in the war in Vietnam. The plaque will be on permanent display.
