Science Department Profile

Our Goal

The goal of the Science Department is to introduce all JEB Stuart students to a wide range of scientific concepts and skills thus preparing them for the Virginia SOL Tests, high school graduation and International Baccalaureate Exams. To that end, the department offers a broad spectrum of courses that include the disciplines of biology, chemistry, geosystems, physics and environmental systems.

Our laboratories include classroom sets of computers and/or access to a mobile computer lab. These computers enable students to make professional style presentations, use sophisticated probeware for collection and analysis of data, and do research using web sites shared by research scientists.

JEB Stuart's staff of 14 science teachers collectively represents over 130 years of teaching experience, 110 of which have been at JEB Stuart High School. Many have had work experience in research or industry in their teaching field. In addition, every member of the department has obtained an undergraduate degree in their discipline and many have graduate degrees in those areas as well. These credentials combined with several degrees in specialized areas of education, provide Stuart students with the opportunity for an excellent high school science experience.

Standards of Learning (SOL) Tests

The combined pass rate for the Biology, Chemistry and Geosystems SOL Tests last year was 81%. A 70% pass rate is required for school accreditation.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

The Science Department of JEB Stuart offers three IB Courses: IB Biology, IB Physics and IB Environmental Systems.

Science Activities Past and Present
