ESOL Department Policy

ESOL Home | Curriculum | Department Policy

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a sequence of courses which teach English structure and usage. The purpose of the program is to help students

  • acquire proficiency in the skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English, and
  • master academic reading and writing skills.

Classes use materials and strategies to introduce, practice, and master these skills. The goal of the ESOL program is to prepare students for

  • communication in the community
  • communication in the workplace
  • success in the American education system.

The ESOL department uses two kinds of assessment:

  1. 1. grades in ESL classes, reflecting the quality of work in small classes with teacher guidance; and
  2. assessments of independent work, using standardized measures as well as teacher-prepared materials.

Level placement is determined by overall student performance; however, independent reading skills are weighed most heavily.
