| Department Policy
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a sequence of courses which teach English structure and usage. The purpose of the program is to help students
- acquire proficiency in the skills of understanding, speaking, reading, and writing English, and
- master academic reading and writing skills.
Classes use materials and strategies to introduce, practice, and master these skills. The goal of the ESOL program is to prepare students for

communication in the community
-
communication in the workplace
-
success in the American education system.
The ESOL department uses two kinds of assessment:

1. grades in ESL classes, reflecting the quality of work in small classes with teacher guidance; and
-
assessments of independent work, using standardized measures as well as teacher-prepared materials.
Level placement is determined by overall student performance; however, independent reading skills are weighed most heavily.
