Language portion of A1

 

Content portion of A1

  • Vocabulary for school, food, clothing, body, house, animals, adjectives. More if able.
  • Reading through grade 2 if able.
  • Basic grammar: pronouns, 3 sentence forms, 4 main verb tenses, punctuation
  • Writing correct sentences and simple paragraphs.
  • Social Studies: map skills, landforms, US/world geography, culture, charts and graphs
  • Science: metric measurement, life cycles of plants and animals, scientific observation, computer skills, five senses, characteristics of living things

Content Portion of A2

  • Reading nonfiction, folktales, fiction, grade level 2-3
  • Identifying simple literary devices
  • Writing paragraph around topic sentence, summary, characterization
  • Continue basic grammar: verb tenses, agreement, modals, comparative & superlative, adverbs, transition words, object & relative pronouns, punctuation with quotations
  • Social Studies: map skills (specialized maps, landforms, regions), US/world geography, climates and communities, US history to Civil War
  • Science: metric measurement, graphing, biomes, ecology, living systems (human body), computer skills

Content Portion of A3

  • Reading: anthologies, folk tales, novels, poetry, drama, historical fiction (US), biography, science, grade level 3-4
  • Reading world history to 1500 A.D.
  • Literary conventions: genres, plot structure, characterization, setting, transitions, point of view
  • Writing: 3-5 paragraph essays, summaries, research, note-taking, etc.
  • Grammar: compound and complex sentences, clauses, perfect tenses, verb phrases.
  • Social Studies: US/world geography, US history Civil War to present, US government, charts and graphs, timelines, categorizing, cause and effect
  • Science: ecology review, scientific method, classification, cell biology, microscope skills, basic biochemistry, basic genetics, computer skills Language

Content Portion of B1

  • Reading all genres, literary terms, timed reading, reading lab, grade level 4-5
  • Writing multiple paragraph essays, all forms, use thesis statement and transitions
  • Formal vocabulary instruction
  • Research using books and electronics
  • Oral presentations
  • Grammar: complex sentences, verbals, apposition
  • Reading texts for World Studies 1 and Biology
  • Vocabulary study for those topics
  • Writing summaries, notes, outlines, reports in good multiple-paragraph form

B2/ English 9 (use regular 9th. grade curriculum

Content Accompanying B2

  • Reading all genre: short stories, novel, drama, poetry, mythology, up to grade level 9
  • Apply all literary devices to reading
  • Use reading lab, independent reading
  • Write multiple-paragraph papers based on literature and research, use writing process
  • Vocabulary program
  • Grammar: review parts of speech and usage, variety in sentence forms, correct grammar and usage throughout
Students usually take all mainstream classes; content depends on grade and previous credits. These classes include World Studies 1 and 2, U.S. and VA History, Biology, Chemistry, and Active Physics. ESOL does not support any specific subjects.
