IB/DP EXTENDED ESSAY
The IB Extended Essay is a requirement for the IB Diploma. It is an independent, self-directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-word paper. It provides a practical preparation for the types of undergraduate research the student will be undertaking in the future as well as an opportunity for the student to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen subject. The student will develop skills in analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating knowledge.
Emphasis is placed on the research process:
- Formulating an appropriate research question
- Engaging in a personal exploration of a topic
- Communicating ideas
- Developing an argument
Students are supported throughout the process with advice and guidance from a Mentor at Stuart High School. The Mentor has regular meetings with the student to help with the process. J.E.B. Stuart High School also holds "Essay Camps" during the summer for seniors to get the process started so that the senior is not starting the project at the last minute.1
