The IB Curriculum consists of six subject groups. For the IB Diploma, the student must:

• Study six subjects chosen from the six subject groups
• Must have a minimum of three (3) Higher Level courses and a minimum of three (3) Standard Level courses
• Complete the Extended Essay
• Complete the Theory of Knowledge (ToK) course
• Complete the Creative, Action, and Service (CAS) requirements

For the IB Diploma, the student must:

• Higher Level (HL):
  • Take a minimum of three (3) courses and a maximum of four (4) courses at the Higher Level
  • HL courses represent 240 teaching hours
  • All HL courses require two years of study at J.E.B. Stuart
  • All HL exams may only be taken in the senior year
• Standard Level (SL):
  • Take a minimum of three (3) courses at the Standard Level
  • SL courses represent 150 teaching hours
  • SL courses may require one or two years, depending on the course requirements
  • SL exams may be taken in junior or senior year, depending on the course requirement

Keep in mind that every student has a tailored IB Diploma Programme and not every student will be following the same exact course of study. The IB Coordinator works with all students who are interested in pursuing the IB Diploma to help make sure all subjects and requirements are met.

The subject groups are arranged as follows and are subject to change per year:

Group 1 - Language A1
This is the home language - i.e. English Literature. The course is offered in both Higher and Standard Levels and require two years of study.

Group 2 - Second Language
This is an acquired modern language - i.e. Spanish, French, and Arabic. The course is offered in both Higher and Standard Levels and require two years of study.

Group 3 - Individuals and Societies
This is History (HL & SL), Business and Management (HL & SL), and Geography (SL only).

Group 4 - Experimental Sciences
This is Biology (HL only), Physics (HL only), Chemistry (SL only), and Environmental Systems (SL only).

Group 5 - Mathematics
This is Math Studies (SL only) and Mathematics (HL & SL).

Group 6 - The Arts*
This is Visual Arts (HL & SL), Theatre Arts (HL & SL), and Music (SL only).
*IB Diploma Candidates may substitute a second exam from Groups 2/3/4 in lieu of choosing Group 6 after consultation and approval from the IB Coordinator.
