ATTENDANCE POLICY
For English: (703) 824-3920 OR Para el español: (703) 824-8970
Students are expected to attend all classes and to arrive on time for each class. Fairfax County Public Schools requires a phone call or a note be received within 48 hours (Two Days) of a student's absence. It is the parent's responsibility to provide this phone call or note. A call to home is placed to confirm validity of the note. Absences that are not excused within 48 hours will be unexcused.
If the student is absent for Four (4) or more consecutive days due to a medical reason, please provide a Doctor's note to have these absences Excused.
If the student has Twenty (20) or more absences in any one class (Excused or Unexcused) throughout the school year, the student's Administrator will require medical verification for any future absences to be Excused. Proof or verification of absences/tardies may be required by the student's Administrator for any unusual pattern of absences/tardies.
LATE ARRIVAL TO SCHOOL
If the student arrives after 7:30am, the student must report directly to the Attendance Office to Check-In. Students who do not Check-In with Attendance will not be excused from classes that they have missed. Repeated failure of a student to report to the Attendance Office upon late arrival may result in disciplinary action.
EARLY CHECK-OUT FROM SCHOOL
Students are not permitted to leave the school building for any reason during the school day unless they have an Early Dismissal Check-Out Pass from the Attendance Office. All Parents/Guardians must come to the school building to pick up their student in order for their student to be allowed to leave school early. No student is allowed to leave the building without a verified adult present.
- For Early Dismissal - The Parent/Guardian must provide a note for early dismissal. The note must state the time of dismissal, the reason for the early dismissal, and include a valid daytime phone number where the Parent/Guardian can be reached. All notes are verified before the student will be given an Early Dismissal Check-Out Pass.
- For Feeling Sick - If a student is feeling sick enough to go home and the Parent/Guardian has been reached who is coming to pick up the student, then the student must receive a pass from the Clinic to give to the Attendance Office before they will be excused to go home.

REASONS FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES INCLUDE

PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCES
Requests for Pre-Arranged Absences (which are absences planned for the future such as family trips, college visits, religious holidays, etc) are limited to a Maximum of Five (5) school days upon approval by the student's Administrator. Approval is not guaranteed and is granted only on a case-by-case basis. Students must get the Pre-Arranged Absent Form from the Attendance Office. The Form must be signed by all Seven (7) Teachers, Student, Parent, and Administrator in order to be approved. Form must be completed and returned to Attendance Office Three (3) school days prior to the Pre-Arranged Absence. Teachers are required to provide homework/assignments for only up to five (5) days.
Pre-Arranged Absences that will be longer than Five (5) school days, will have the Absent Days 6-15 be Unexcused. Please note, that regardless of the pre-arranged absence, after 15 missed school days, the student is automatically withdrawn from the school.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES/TARDIES
Parents/Guardians will receive an automated phone call from the Attendance Office when their student has an "unverified" absence from class. Parents/Guardians should call the Attendance Office the next school day to clarify the absence. "Unverified" absence/tardy is equal to an "Unexcused" absence/tardy.
Three (3) Unexcused tardies (being late to class) are equal to One (1) Unexcused Absence. A student is considered "Tardy" when they arrive more than 10minutes late to class.
Per Section 22.1-258 of the Code of Virginia, when a student has accumulated Five (5) days of unexcused absences, the school is required to refer students to the Attendance Officer for further action.
Withdrawal - If the student has 15 or more unexcused absences, the student is withdrawn from school and must re-enroll at Stuart in order to continue.
OTHER INFORMATION
IDENTIFICATION CARDS
All Students are issued a Photo Identification Card with a Bar Code upon the first two weeks of the academic school year. These cards are scanned upon entry into the building every morning before school starts as well as being used as a Library Card. Students are required to wear their Identification Card at all times. There is no fee for the First Card. Any replacement cards thereafter require a $1.00 fee.
15 MINUTE RULE
Students are not allowed to leave class during the first 15 minutes of class and the last 15 minutes of class unless there is an emergency. Teachers enforce this rule.
PARTICIPATION RULE
Students must be in school and attend all classes for the entire day in order to be eligible to participate in any student activities that are happening on that day - this includes sports. Exceptions to this rule may be made with prior approval of the Principal or the Principal's designee.
MAKE-UP WORK RULE
If the student is absent - whether excused or unexcused - make-up work is encouraged. For excused absences, make-up work will receive full credit. If the absence is unexcused, make-up work receives no credit. Any exception to this rule shall require the student's Administrator's approval.
Regardless of credit vs. no credit, make-up work is encouraged and it is the student's responsibility to contact the teacher of each class missed to arrange make-up work for the first day back to school. If the student is absent for One (1) day, the work must be made up in One (1) day. If the student is absent for Two (2) days, the work must be made up in Two (2) days. This continues up to Ten (10) days. Any exception to this rule shall require the student's Administrator's approval.
MOVING QUESTIONS
Parents/Guardians must notify Student Services when their home address and/or telephone numbers have changed. The student may bring in a copy of their current utilities bill (water, electricity, gas, cable, telephone), lease/rental agreement, or mortgage agreement to verify the new address.
If the family moves outside of Fairfax County, the students are no longer eligible to attend Fairfax County Public Schools and will be automatically withdrawn.
If you aren't sure if your new address is still within the Fairfax County limits, please check your address at the Boundary Locater Service.
