J.E.B. Stuart High School Honor Code

Raider Pledge

As a J.E.B. Stuart student, I pledge to be: honest, trustworthy, fair, respectful, and responsible in all academic pursuits.

J. E. B. Stuart High School values and models Academic Integrity with all members of the community exemplifying the five fundamentals of the Raider Pledge.

HONEST - Accepting that intellectual and personal honesty in learning, teaching, research, and service is an expectation.

TRUSTWORTHY – Affirming confidence in persons and systems that enable a free exchange of ideas, and enables all to reach their highest potential.

FAIR – Determining clear standards for assessment that are applied consistently to all members of the J. E. B. Stuart learning community

RESPECTFUL – Acknowledging the participatory nature of learning and honoring the varying perspectives of others.

RESPONSIBLE – Believing that every person in the community is accountable for taking action when a breach of academic integrity occurs.

 

Responsibilities

Students will...

  • Exercise academic honesty in all aspects of their work.
  • Prepare sufficiently for all types of assessments.
  • Seek extra help from teachers.
  • Refrain from cheating, plagiarizing, lying, stealing and acquiring an unfair advantage.
  • Use sources in the prescribed manner.
  • Report any violations of the Honor Code.

Teachers will...

  • Develop, model, and sustain ethical practices within the classroom setting.
  • Report violations to counselors and administrators.
  • Confer with those who violate the Honor Code.
  • Contact the student's parent or guardian regarding a violation.

Parents will...

  • Discuss the Honor Code with their son/daughter to ensure understanding.
  • Encourage their child to maintain high standards with regard to integrity, honesty, and personal responsibility.
  • Support faculty and administration in enforcing the Honor Code.

Administrators will...

  • Ensure that all faculty, students, and parents receive the Honor Code.
  • Help contribute to a school-wide environment that encourages adherence to the Honor Code.
  • Maintain accurate records of Honor Code violations.
  • Ensure that the Honor Code is being applied consistently throughout the school.

 

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIORS

The following are examples of unacceptable forms of academic conduct:

  1. Cheating – Includes providing answers to others, copying assignments or tests from other students, or looking at other student's test, homework, and other assignments
  2. Plagiarizing – Using another person's thoughts, ideas or words without proper reference. Includes the act of recycling or purchasing assignments or papers.
  3. Lying, Forging, Falsification, and Misrepresentation – Lying or failing to give complete information to a teacher or staff member, Forging signatures or tampering with official records, Falsification or fraudulently adding, deleting, or manipulating information on academic work, Misrepresenting any academic assignment, either in writing or verbally, as one's own work.
  4. Stealing – Possessing and/or removing any item(s) that is not the student's property from their location without the knowledge or permission of the owner.
  5. Acquiring an Unfair Advantage – Looking at tests or other assignments ahead of time, looking at teacher's material without permission, receiving information regarding tests or other assignments from other students.

 

CONSEQUENCES

Violations of the Honor Code accumulate throughout the student's high school career. If a student does not violate the Honor Code for one calendar year, the next violation will be considered a first offense.

First Offense (and all subsequent offenses):

  • Immediate referral to the student's administrator and counselor for information purposes and to be recorded in their permanent record.
  • Parent will be contacted by the teacher regarding the violation.
  • Student will complete a make-up or alternate assignment with a one letter grade penalty.
  • Consequences for any additional violations of the Honor Code will be discussed at that time.

Second Offense:

  • Immediate referral to the student's administrator for disciplinary action, warranting Saturday School.
  • Parent will be contacted by the teacher regarding the violation.
  • Student will complete a make-up or alternate assignment with a one letter grade penalty.
  • Conference including the student's administrator, the teacher, the counselor, the parent, and the student.
  • f student is a member of any honor society, the administrator will notify the society sponsor of the violation.
    • The society will decide consequences for the member according to the by-laws of the society.
  • Consequences for any additional violations of the Honor Code will be discussed at that time.

Third Offense (and all subsequent offenses):

  • Immediate referral to the student's administrator for disciplinary action, warranting one day of Alternative Instructional Arrangement (AIA).
  • Parent will be contacted by the teacher regarding the violation.
  • Student will not be allowed complete a make-up or alternative assignment on the third offense, and the student will earn a failing grade on the assignment (as determined by the grading committee).
  • Conference including the student's administrator, the teacher, the counselor, the parent, and the student.
  • If student is a member of any honor society, the administrator will notify the society sponsor of the violation.
    • The society will decide consequences for the member according to the by-laws of the society.
  • Consequences for any additional violations of the Honor Code will be discussed at that time.
