About Stratford Landing Elementary School
Stratford Landing opened its doors in 1962. It was a small school, having only two hallways. By 1966, the surrounding community was rapidly growing and Stratford Landing had its first major renovation; a hallway was added to the school. In 1986, another renovation was necessary to accommodate the varying needs of the community in the school; the gym, music room and space for the School Aged Child Care program (SACC) were added.
By 1998, three additional units were added, as well as the construction of a new playground and the renovation of the existing ones. Additional learning cottages have been added every year since 1998 as the Stratford Landing school community continues to grow. During the summer of 2005 Stratford Landing received a new modular unit providing 10 classrooms for the expanding number of students. The modular building replaced learning cottages, providing a better learning environment for our students. There are currently three learning cottages at Stratford Landing and they are used for SACC, Band/Strings, and School Based Level 3 Services.
Stratford Landing is located adjacent to the area of Alexandria known as Gum Springs. This area is well known as one of George Washington's original slave quarters. West Ford bought the land in 1833 and became the first African American owner of the 214 acre parcel of land known as Gum Springs. Gum Springs was the first African American community in Northern Virginia.
