DramaDrama Club

Participants will use their imaginations to bring to life classic poems from Robert Louis Stevenson, A.A. Milne, Edward Leer and other well known poets.  Students will also learn the value of teamwork, as they collaborate to create their own unique poetry, which they will make come alive through dramatic interpretation.

The class will also include traditional theatre games, improvisations and imagination exercises that will help develop verbal skills, increase vocabulary and aid in self-confidence.

And what poetry class would be complete without the Bard!  K-2nd graders will be given a gentle introduction to Shakespeare as they work with Ashley Hammond on famous rhyming couplets.  Grades 3-6 will have the opportunity to work on longer passages of verse with Heather Sanderson, founder/director of StagePlay.

The Fall program runs from Tuesday, October 14 – Tuesday, December 9 for grades K-2 & 3-6.  Watch for detail about a winter/spring drama club!

Foreign Language Program (FLEX)

The secret to learning a language? Start early. During childhood (ages 1-12) language learning happens almost effortlessly.

You'll be astonished by the many ways your child will benefit far beyond speaking the new language. Many experts report that early exposure to a foreign language – any language – has been scientifically linked to increased cognitive abilities, improved English and math scores, a richer vocabulary and even a boost in SAT scores.

Geography ClubGeography Club

Each year thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society.  The contest is designed to encourage teachers to include geography in their classrooms, spark student interest in the subject, and increase public awareness of geography.  This club is for students in grades 4-6, and meets weekly to prepare for the Geography Bee held in the winter.

Odyssey of the Mind  a

OM is an annual international creative problem solving competition for students in kindergarten through college.  The purpose of the program is to foster and develop creative thinking and problem solving skills among young people.  Participants compete in two formats – working on (1) a long-term problem that can range from building mechanical devices or putting on a mini-play complete with costumes and props and responding to (2) a spontaneous problem on competition day (this year March 17 at Hayfield High School).  Students are fully responsible for all the planning and execution for the problems!  Primary teams (K – 2nd grade) only work on the primary long-term problem (see reverse for description).

This creative problem-solving competition needs volunteer coaches to guide small groups of students.  Time commitment is approximately two hours a week, mid-November through March.  Each coach sets their own meeting time and training is provided.
