About Ormond Stone
|
Ormond Stone Middle School opened in September 1991. The school was named for a professor of astronomy and mathematics who was a resident of Centreville, Virginia. Professor Stone owned the farm land in the vicinity of the school, and Stone Road is also named for him. Professor Stone is credited with discovering 44 pairs of double stars, and he played a major role in establishing the system of standard time belts in the United States. In 1882, the world's largest refractor was presented to the University of Virginia. The telescope was the first one in the country to use electricity. Professor Stone was invited to become the director of the observatory at the University of Virginia, and while he was there, many important discoveries were made using the telescope. In 1929, Professor Stone requested space to be used for Fairfax County's first public library. He spent the rest of his life working to support the library. Ormond Stone died in 1933. In May 1992, students and parents were invited to participate in the school's official dedication. This year, we celebrate twelve years of academic excellence at Ormond Stone Middle School. |
