The
South Lakes Sentinel newspaper staff is the Journalism 2, 3, and 4 class.
All students must take Journalism 1 in order to take Journalism 2. During
class time, students write articles for the newspaper, take pictures, and
design the final product. The goal of the class is to produce one issue
of the paper per month, focusing on school issues, school sports and events.
The students in the class decide what to cover each issue, and they do all
of the interviews and editing for each story. Every year, the class selects 2-3 students as editors for the school year. This year, seniors Bea Hernandez, Katie Reinberg, and Andrew Burkart are the editors of the paper. They decide what articles go on each page, and they spend hours after school working to meet the publication deadlines. Another important factor in newspaper production is advertising. Junior Hannah Donnelly is the advertising editor this year, and she coordinates with businesses to sell advertisement space in the newspaper. |
The Journalism
1 class spends most of the school year learning how to write like journalists.
It is a very different style than they use in English classes, but many
students are better at writing for the newspaper. After learning techniques
for writing, editing, interviewing, and photography, the Journalism 1 class
produces one issue of the South Lakes Sentinel. They do all of the steps
on their own, from electing an editorial staff, to planning the content,
to reporting and writing, and finally layout and design. If the class meets
all the deadlines for production, they earn a celebration breakfast when
the newspaper comes out. Seeing other students enjoying their hard work
is a great reward, and many are surprised to see how many people comment
on their success. |
