Highlights

  • South Lakes ranks #32 among D.C. area schools and #212 in the national rankings of the 2011 Challenge Index!

  • The Latina Danza Awards was held at South Lakes High School and is now airing on SchoolScene

  • The South Lakes Sentinel, led this year by co-managing editors Emily Lipscomb and Kaitlin Welker (Class of 2013), earned a best of show ranking at the NSPA Fall Convention in Minneapolis. The Sentinel placed 9th nationally in the 13-16 page category for its first print issue of the 2011-12 school year. Nine scholastic journalists from South Lakes attended the convention, held from Nov. 16-19, attending workshops in writing, online media, and digital photography, along with session covering all aspects of scholastic journalism.

  • Seahawk juniors Ksitij Kumar and Joselyn Carballo were selected for the prestigious, paid summer French and Spanish Language State Department Internships. The selection process is very competitive and this opportunity is extended to just one student per each language from the entire county. Ksitij, in French, and Joselyn, in Spanish, were the only two selected.

  • The South Lakes High School Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform as part of the Music for All National Festival, presented by Yamaha, March 15-17 in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Music for All National Festival is recognized as the epitome of scholastic instrumental music festivals in America. Music for All is one of the nation's largest and most influential organizations advocating in support of music education.

  • Junior Layla Sharaf was selected to serve on the Student Advisory Team of the Newseum.

  • Junior Kate Badgett was one of three students in the United States to win the competitive Ruta Quetzal  Scholarship sponsored by the King and Queen of Spain.  Her 20-page, documented historical fiction story in Spanish earned her this chance to join students from 55 countries in a summer expedition to Columbia, Spain, and the Canary Islands.  The program will explore history, anthropology, arts, economics, literature, technology, sciences, ethnography, current international issues, and more as it fosters relationships between Europe and the Americas.

  • For the remainder of 4th quarter, the seminar periods will be reverting to the format we used last year. Students will split the time between two classes during the seminar periods. Attendance is mandatory. Unlike the earlier R&R periods, no students will have a choice of where to go. The full class meets at the assigned times. Ob Wednesday, April 18, periods 6 and 1 will meet. On Friday, April 20, periods 7 and 2 will meet during this time. Students need to make themselves aware of which seminars meet and be prepared for class. Parents and students can keep up with the schedule by going to the SLHS Web Page and go to Schedules and Calendars to look up the new Blue-green day schedule for the rest of the year.

  • The dates of the Extended Essay Workshop have been changed because the school year ends early.  The new dates are: June 18 and 20, 9am – 2pm and June 19, 1pm - 4pm.

  • Senior Dues are $40 until Spring Break (the end of 3rd Quarter, March 30). After that, Senior Dues go up to $60.

  • SLHS - Driver Education Parent/Guardian Teen Traffic Safety Program. As a part of classroom driver education instruction, students and their parent/guardian are required to attend a 90-minute traffic safety program. This requirement must be met before a student will receive a Driver Education Certificate of Completion (DEC-1 card). This program will be held on the following dates during the 2011-2012 school year. All meetings will take place in the Auditorium.

    • Tuesday May 15 at 7 pm

  • VIRGINIA CONCUSSION and BRAIN INJURY STATUTE - Virginia Code 22.1-271.5 requires all student-athletes and a parent complete a concussion education program. Upon successful completion of this program, the school will have your record updated. Students and parents must complete separate programs. Required before an athlete can attend tryouts!

  • Athletic Administration Fee: On May 20, 2010 the Fairfax County School Board approved fees for participating in VHSL athletics and activities.

  • The IB Visual Arts open house will be held Thursday night, April 19th, from 6-8 PM (Same time as personal project display) in the Lecture Hall.

  • April 23rd – April 27th is Mental Wellness Week at South Lakes HS.  Activities will be coordinated and information will be presented throughout all lunch periods and during morning announcements.  Topics will include coping with stress, self reflection, how to get help for self or others when necessary and how self care connects with mental wellness.  In partnership with The Josh Anderson Foundation, speaker Jordan Burnham will talk to our students in the auditorium on Tuesday, April 24th during Seahawk Seminar 8.  Jordan is a young adult who survived a suicide attempt in his senior year of high school.  He brings a wonderful message of hope and encourages us all to talk more openly about mental health issues.  Please contact Kari Olsen, keolsen@fcps.edu, Sue Stemetzki, sustemetzki@fcps.edu or Erica Bettwy embettwy@fcps.edu for more information.
