Language Arts

We will focus on strengthening reading skills by concentrating our phonics lessons on medial consonants, consonant clusters, diphthongs and vowel sounds. We are working on adding details to our writing and starting to edit our work for correct capitalization and punctuation. We will continue to work on comprehension strategies especially making connections, asking questions and making inferences.

Math

We'll continue to group for math. Each class will cover the same basic curriculum but the teaching methods and the complexity of the lessons will vary depending on the needs of the children in the group. Topics for the third quarter include addition and subtraction strategies, place value, and money.

Social Studies

Our biography study will focus on Sandra Day O'Connor, Gary Soto and George Washington Carver. Our economics unit will continue a study of using money and the production of goods. We will continue to work on map skills.

Science/Health

Our nature studies will continue with lessons on natural resources and light. We will begin a new unit focusing on seeds and plants. This quarter the children will learn about dental health, personal health and safety and a unit on substance abuse prevention.

Specials

Music classes will continue to work on keeping a steady beat, learning new games and songs and increasing their knowledge of instruments. P.E. units this quarter will include jumping rope, tumbling and folk dancing.
In art the children will glaze their clay sculpture and make paper bag puppets. They will also paint or draw a textured animal.
