Program Overview
In 2007, Carl Sandburg Middle School launched its Extended Day program with great pride! The program is designed specifically to meet the needs of students who wish to extend their involvement in extra-curricular activities and for families who want their children to remain in a supervised environment after school until parent pick up.
Extended Day is not a child care service, but a free enrichment based program that offers students daily academic assistance, peer-to-peer interaction, as well as enrichment and recreational activities.
- Does my child need to register to participate in Extended Day?
- Yes, parents must sign and return a registration form to the main office before a student may participate in Extended Day.
- Where can I get an After School Program registration form?
- Forms are located in the main office and online at the schools website.
- What are the program hours of operation?
Tuesday: 2:50-5:45pm (Sept. – June)
Wednesday: 4:30-5:45pm (Sept. – June)
Thursday: 4:30-6:00pm (Sept. – June)
Friday: 2:50-6:00pm (Sept. – June)
- Why do Extended Day operating times change throughout the week?
- This program is designed to extend our student’s extra curricular experience; therefore Extended Day begins immediately after school on days that after school clubs and activities are not available (Tuesday & Friday). On days that clubs and activities are available, the Extended Day program will begin at the time clubs/activities end (4:30pm).
After school clubs will begin September 30, 2009.
- Is my child required to stay Monday-Friday?
- No, as long as your child is a registered participant, they can participate in Extended Day as needed. It is the primary responsibility of the parent/guardian to communicate with their children which days they are expected to stay for Extended Day and await parent pick up.
- I want my child to participate in the Extended Program only on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday but it does not start until 4:30pm, what should my child do from 2:50-4:30pm?
- Students should get involved in a club or activity! If they do not want to participate, they may need to work with a teacher or attend the general study hall session, which is available every day immediately after school in a designated classroom. Afterwards, they may transition into the Extended Day Program and should report to the Auxiliary Cafeteria .
- Does the Extended Day program keep attendance records?
- Yes, as students arrive for Extended Day, they must sign in. Attendance records are kept on file all year.
- When will Extended Day closed?
- School Holidays/Student Breaks/Special school functions
- early dismissal/Inclement Weather Closings and the 3rd Thursday of each month
- Will my child receive snack in Extended Day?
- Yes, all students receive snacks during Extended Day.
- If I have any questions regarding the Extended Day program, who should I contact?
- Mr. Cleckley at (703)799-6126 or adrian.cleckley@fcps.edu
- Note: All students must be picked up by a parent/guardian no later than 5:45pm.
