ALL HANDS ON DECK!
TALKING POINTS TO STOP THE PROPOSED CUTS TO ATHLETICS AND THE $100 FEE!

EFFECTS OF CUTS:
-Studies show participation HS activities largest indicator of future success (more than grades and SAT’s)
-Athletics promote discipline, teamwork, dedication – which are hard to teach in the classroom
-Health issues – obesity is now one of our worst problems, lots of data to prove this.
-All cuts are bad, but cutting sports is hurting a revenue producing activity – and the fee is a tax on top of that which does NOT go back to athletics
-Thousands of athletes affected (over 2700 in Fresh. Sports alone) – lower grades, truancy, gang related
-Ruins effects of Middle School after school activity program
-Huge impact on JV and Varsity teams – can’t carry many freshmen, dilutes performances – plus can’t afford equipment costs for larger teams
-$100 fee reduces participation, meaning less gate receipts. Huge impact on Booster club membership (who raise over 7 million county wide!)
-Hurts Fairfax County scholastic reputation just when they are trying to attract new business (families look for what activities are offered and move there) which hurt property values.
-Local sports clubs have stated they can’t handle a huge influx of athletes due to these cuts
-Freshmen sports 3rd largest producer of revenues.  Indoor track has largest participation with low costs.
-$100 does not go back to athletics, but rather the County’s general fund
EFFECTS ON BOOSTERS:
-Boosters pay for equipment, training room needs, scoreboards, recognition programs, hospitality for regional and district tournaments.  All this will be greatly reduced by cuts.
-Field maintenance passed down to school level is a huge part of Booster budgets, which is never paid back.
SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS:
-Share buses
-Higher facility usage fees and higher club sport participant fees (now $5,50 per)
-If there is a $100 fee, all of it should go to athletics
-18% of our school budget comes from Richmond – Prince Wm gets 46%, Prince George 50%, Loudoun 25%.  Should be different.
-County wide sponsorship program to include naming rights to certain venues
-County wide coordination of hosting tournaments (anything to bring people into the county)
